Introduction

Vasaka is also known as Malabar nut, a crucial plant drug in ancient Ayurveda and Unani medicine. Vasaka has its references in the Atharvaveda. Vasaka leaves, bark, roots, and flowers have been used in the preparations of herbal medications for the past 2000 years. The Vasaka plant is a small, evergreen shrub with green leaves and white flowers with an unpleasant smell and bitter taste. It is native to India’s dry climates and dry soils. It happily grows at the foothills of the Himalayas, Sri Lanka, Burma, and Malaysia. In Vasaka, ‘vasa’ translates to ‘perfumes’ from its flowers. Vasaka in Sanskrit botany is known as “lion’s muzzle” and “stallion’s tooth” both names honour the plant’s strength. The scientific name of Vasaka is Justicia adhatoda (Adhatoda vasica). The other terms of Vasaka are Arusa, Adulsa, Vasika, and Vajidanta1,4. Let us discuss Vasaka’s benefits, nutritional composition, and potential uses.

Vasaka leaves decoction may contain two major alkaloids, vasicinone and vasicine. Animal studies by Shivendra Pratap Singh and Das in 2021 found that Vasaka might have activity against respiratory disorders such as asthma and bronchitis. It may have broncho-dilatory properties, which might open the airway passage of the lung. It may liquify the thick and sticky sputum, help expel it quickly and release congestion. In asthma, the dried leaf may be smoked for instant relief1,4. However, human research is needed to suggest the benefits of Vasaka for asthma and bronchitis. Consult a qualified physician and take appropriate medical treatment.

3. Potential Uses of Vasaka for Wound Healing

wound healing

Research suggests that Vasaka may have wound-healing activity. In an animal study, Vasaka plant extracts were applied to the wound. It was found that the rate of wound healing was increased. The tensile strength of the skin and the production of skin collagen and elastin may also be increased. Vasaka leaves poultice (bandage) may be applied on the fresh wound or inflammatory swelling might help reduce microbial infections and may heal the wounds1,3. Still, more human research is needed to develop its uses for wound healing.

Eucalyptus Oil: Uses, Benefits, Side Effects By Dr. Smita Barode https://pharmeasy.in/blog/ayurveda-uses-benefits-side-effects-of-eucalyptus-oil/ https://pharmeasy.in/blog/ayurveda-uses-benefits-side-effects-of-eucalyptus-oil/#respond Tue, 10 Jan 2023 06:39:40 +0000 https://pharmeasy.in/blog/?p=167326

Introduction

Aromatic herbs are being widely used, especially in rural areas. Eucalyptus is one such aromatic oil that has seen an increase in its use in developing countries.

Eucalyptus oil, also known as nilgiri oil, is an essential oil derived from the distillation of fresh leaves of Eucalyptus globulus and other species like E. polybractea, E. smithii, and E. viminalis, belonging to the family Myrtaceae. This tall evergreen tree is native to Tasmania and Australia. Further, it is found in Spain, the United States, Brazil, Portugal, North and South Africa, France, Southern Europe, and India. In India, it is majorly cultivated in Punjab and Haryana.

It is a straw-coloured or colourless fluid with a characteristic smell that may be described as camphor-like and pungent, and its taste is also said to be camphoraceous, followed by a cooling sensation. Let’s read about eucalyptus oil’s benefits and side effects1.

Did you know?

  • Eucalyptus oil has antimicrobial properties and can be effective against certain bacteria and fungi.
  • Research suggests that eucalyptus oil may help relieve pain and inflammation when applied topically.
  • Eucalyptus oil is often used as an ingredient in over-the-counter cough and cold medications.

Nutritional Value of Eucalyptus Oil

Eucalyptus oil is known for its wide variety of bioactive compounds. They are enlisted below:

  • 1,8-eucalyptus: 72.71%
  • α-terpine: 2.54%
  • Terpiene-4-ol: 0.34%
  • Linalool: 0.24%
  • α-eudesmol: 0.39%
  • (-)-globulol: 2.77%
  • Epilobulol: 0.44%
  • α-terpineol acetate: 3.1%
  • Geranyl acetate: 0.71%
  • L-pinocarveol: 0.36%
  • β-sabinene: 0.25%
  • Terpinolene: 0.19%

Chemical constituents of Eucalyptus oil1.

A total of 0.26% of eucalyptus oil constituents are unknown.

Based on my experience, I have observed that eucalyptus oil might possess hepatoprotective properties. This means that it could potentially protect the liver from damage caused by certain toxins. It is believed to involve the presence of ursolic acid, a compound found in the leaves of Eucalyptus hybrid E. tereticomis. Ursolic acid is known to have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, which may contribute to its ability to protect the liver cells from damage and promote their regeneration12.

Potential Uses of Eucalyptus Oil for Overall Health

The potential benefits of eucalyptus oil for your health are:

1. Potential Uses of Eucalyptus Oil for Urinary Tract Infection

In a study14 done by Moreira in 2001, eucalyptus oil may help in treating urinary tract infections. It may be used in an emulsion mixture with powdered gum arabic and water. This mixture may be given as urethral injections. However, a doctor should be consulted before using nilgiri oil1.

2. Potential Uses of Eucalyptus Oil for Diabetics

Home Remedies For Diabetes

Eucalyptus essential oil has shown potential anti-diabetic properties. In a comparative study8 in 1998 by Gray, they observed the effects of eucalyptus for management of diabetes by partial restoration of pancreatic cells in rats. Further, Dey observed that eucalyptus citriodora showed potential anti-diabetic activity that was analogous to the standard diabetes drug Glibenclamide. Although, this won’t replace the medication prescribed by your doctor, you should consult a doctor before using eucalyptus oil for diabetes1,2.

3. Potential Uses of Eucalyptus Oil for Respiratory Diseases

respiratory disease

Sonker et. al in a study9 in 2017 observed that eucalyptus oil may potentially relieve symptoms of respiratory diseases. It was reported in a study that major constituents of this essential oil may relieve coughing, stimulate breathing, relax the respiratory muscles and remove mucus. Further, it may help in sore throat, runny nose, cough, cold, asthma, bronchitis, sinusitis, and nasal congestion. Nilgiri oil can help in reducing the symptoms but should not be replaced with conventional treatment without consulting your doctor1.

4. Potential Uses of Eucalyptus Oil for Wound Healing

wound healing

In a study10 in 1994, Sarkar found sores, cuts, scrapes, abrasions, burns and wounds may be benefitted using eucalyptus leaf essential oil. It can be used in the form of an ointment or salve to potentially use on bug bites and stings. In a study by Sabo in 2019, extracts of eucalyptus species showed a probable reduction in the size of acetic acid-induced ulcers in rats. Therefore, it may be a possibility that eucalyptus oil can be used for wound healing. You should consult a doctor before using eucalyptus oil on your wounds1.

5. Potential Uses of Eucalyptus Oil in Pain Relief

osteoarthritis

Maruyama11 in 2005 observed that aromatherapy massage potentially suppresses the inflammatory symptoms of oedema and neutrophil accumulation. This is because eucalyptus oil is volatile and hence, gets easily absorbed into the muscle and nerve. It has a property to reduce pain (analgesic). Eucalyptus may help in case of chronic pain along with conventional medication. Eucalyptus oil should not be traded for your medication without consulting your doctor1,2.

6. Other Potential Uses

Other than the above-noted uses of eucalyptus, they are also some other eucalyptus oil uses and benefits, such as:

  • Eucalyptus oil for pain relief during menstrual cramps.
  • There are potential benefits of Nilgiri oil for hair as it may control sebum production and help scalp health4.
  • It has shown potential anti-cancer activity. Eucalyptus globulus oil may inhibit the rapidly growing colon cancer cells and maybe be used as adjuvant therapy5.
  • It may be useful in treating malaria. However, it cannot replace cinchona, which contains quinine, a compound used in the treatment of malaria1.
  • It can potentially heal different intestinal worm infections1.
  • It may be beneficial to apply eucalyptus oil externally during an upper airway infection1.
  • It may be used to treat plaque and gum diseases as it contains cineole, an antiseptic that can destroy bacteria responsible for bad breath6.

Though there are studies that show the benefits of the eucalyptus oil in various conditions, these are insufficient and there is a need for further studies to establish the true extent of benefits of eucalyptus oil on human health.

For both chemical and natural techniques, the chosen eucalyptus oil is a unique kind. An ingredient in the oil of lemon eucalyptus (OLE) is known to repel mosquitoes and other insects. I recommend the use of eucalyptus oil under the doctor’s supervision13.

Dr. Smita Barode, B.A.M.S, M.S.

How to Use Eucalyptus Oil?

Eucalyptus oil may be used in a number of ways to treat different conditions. Some ways to use eucalyptus oil are:

  • It could be used as a salve or ointment.
  • It could be used as dried tea leaves.
  • It may be present in cough drops, syrups, vaporizer fluids, toothpaste, mouthwashes and liniments. However, it should not be taken in large doses.
  • You can use over-the-counter medications containing eucalyptus oils for mouthwash or cough.
  • You can dilute eucalyptus essential oil with creams and apply for topical use in wound healing6.

You must consult a qualified doctor before taking any herbal supplements. Do not discontinue or replace an ongoing treatment of modern medicine with an ayurvedic/herbal preparation without consulting a qualified doctor.

One essential component of various topical analgesics is eucalyptus. These include creams, salves, sprays, and other topical painkillers that you may apply straight to your skin. From my knowledge, eucalyptus oil works by creating a cool or warm sensation that may distract you from the pain, even if it is not the primary painkiller13.

Dr. Anuja Bodhare, B.A.M.S, M.D (Ayu)

Side Effects of Eucalyptus Oil

Like most essential oils, eucalyptus oil also has many side effects. The most common eucalyptus oil side effects are:

  • You may experience skin reactions like rashes, itching and eczema.
  • The side effects of inhaling eucalyptus oil can be asthma attacks and fever.
  • It is absorbed rapidly and may show neurotoxicity effects.
  • If you swallow even as little as half a teaspoon, you may experience dizziness, suffocation, delirium, rapid heartbeat and burning in the throat and mouth15.

Precautions to Take with Eucalyptus Oil

You now know that eucalyptus oil should not be consumed by itself. Some other precautions to be taken with eucalyptus oil include:

  • Do not use eucalyptus oil if you are allergic to it.
  • Do not administer to children below 1 year of age.
  • Do not take the oil orally in large doses.
  • It should be avoided by pregnant and lactating mothers unless prescribed by the doctor7.

Interactions with Other Drugs

Eucalyptus is generally considered safe for topical use. However, it should never be consumed orally, especially without dilution with some other ingredients. It is considered toxic when consumed orally and may interact with your medications. Eucalyptus oil may affect the metabolic activity of the liver and thus, may disrupt the metabolism of certain drugs6

If you are consuming any drug that may be metabolized by the liver, contact your general physician before using eucalyptus oil. For instance, 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) is a medication used to treat cancer. It was observed in an animal study that when eucalyptus oil is used on the skin caused an increase in the absorption of topical 5-FU. Further, some diabetic medication also interacts with eucalyptus oil3,6.

Benefits of Jalneti and How to Do It By Dr. Ankit Sankhe https://pharmeasy.in/blog/health-fitness-benefits-of-jalneti-and-how-to-do-it/ https://pharmeasy.in/blog/health-fitness-benefits-of-jalneti-and-how-to-do-it/#respond Fri, 16 Dec 2022 15:20:44 +0000 https://pharmeasy.in/blog/?p=164544

Introduction

Health is the real wealth. It is the path to one’s happiness. Health is defined as having the physical, emotional, mental and social ability to deal with one’s environment. Yoga includes breathwork practices, mainly through the nose and nostrils, and it may be hard to keep the nasal passages clean especially in those having upper respiratory tract ailments. Therefore, ‘Shatkarma’, the six types of cleansing practices described in hatha yoga, are beneficial before performing yoga asanas. Among these, jalneti is the most popular and widely used method that is helpful in respiratory illnesses and other health issues. In addition, neti practices allow you to perform yoga and pranayama much more comfortably1,3. Let’s find out more about jalneti now.

What is Jalneti?

In Sanskrit, jala means ‘water’, and neti means ‘to guide’. Jalneti is mainly intended to clean the nasal airways of the body2. Let us learn the process of jalneti.

How to Do It?

Jalneti is ideally practised in the morning before asanas and pranayama3. The process of jalneti is as follows:

  • To do jalneti, you need a unique pot known as a neti pot3
  • Take salted warm water in the neti pot2
  • After gently inserting the nozzle into the uppermost nostril, open the mouth2
  • Wait for the water to come out from the other nostril2
  • Wait until all the water has exited from the other nostril2.
  • Then repeat on the other side2,3.
  • Afterwards, water will run in your mouth, and you can spit it out3
  • Some sources suggest using milk and honey instead of lukewarm water3

In this way, you can practice the jalneti.

Did You Know?

  • The ‘nasal wash’ originated in ancient India and has been used for cleansing by ancient yogis and people for centuries. It has been practised as commonly as tooth brushing in South East Asia including India. It is named ‘Neti’ in the Siddha discipline.
  • “It clears the nasal passage. In winter, especially in polluted cities like Delhi, particulate matter clogs up the nasal cavity and lungs. This kriya cleanses out the dirt,” said a popular yoga trainer.

Let us go into more detail about the benefits of jalneti.

Benefits of Jalneti

The cleansing process jalneti has several benefits as follows:

1. Benefits of jalneti for upper respiratory tract conditions

According to yogic literature3, jalneti may reduce the progress and occurrence of upper respiratory tract infections. It may be more effective in managing rhinitis, which occurs due to inflammation of the mucous membrane of the nose. It may also be helpful in sinusitis, in which inflammation occurs inthe nasal spaces and head or sinuses. It appears to be effective in both children and adults. Jalneti process may restore nasal mucosa capacity and fight against mucus and dirt. Jalneti may also be helpful in respiratory diseases such as asthma, pneumonia, bronchitis, and pulmonary tuberculosis as it may clear the nasal canal and increase oxygen intake, improving respiratory functions. However, don’t rely on jalneti as it can cause serious side effects. So, please visit a doctor for proper therapy and try this under the supervision of a trainer.

2. Benefits of jalneti for eliminating toxins from the body

Cleansing processes like neti and dhauti might be helpful in removal of toxins and other unwanted secretions from air sinuses and nasal passages. It might even clear the secretions from the gastrointestinal tract. In addition, it may help to reduce the volume of infected material and intensity of infection4. Even so, you must consult a doctor for proper diagnosis and treatment.

3. Benefits of jalneti for rheumatoid arthritis

A study by Singh et al., 20114 showed the effectiveness of jalneti and yoga asanas in managing rheumatoid arthritis. It may reduce the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis like early morning stiffness, pulse rate, joint inflammation, pain intensity, lymphocyte count, blood pressure and uric acid levels in the participants. Thus, yoga and jalneti might be used as sound therapy for rheumatoid arthritis for faster healing if done with medication. Kindly consult a doctor for better results.

4. Benefits of jalneti for mental health

Jalneti may improve the presence of mind and intelligence. Also, it may relieve stress. In a study5, Uma and others developed an integrated approach to yoga comprising jalneti as a therapeutic tool for mentally disabled children. The results were positive as it improved their mental ability, intelligence and social behaviour. In addition, jalneti may improve memory, concentration and occupational stress. Also, it may help reduce anxiety and depression3. However, the promising result of jalneti in improving mental health needs to be explored. Please consult the doctor to avoid complications.

5. Benefits of jalneti for eyes

Lauha et al. did a study comparing yoga therapy, including jalneti and others. The result was that jalneti and others had a more significant impact on the reduction of myopia, a condition where distant objects appear blurry. Jalneti may relax the eyes by stimulating the tear ducts and glands. It may improve eyesight. Along with other yoga techniques, it may help with symptoms such as eye pain, heaviness, strain and moisture. Even so, we need more research to claim the effects of jalneti on the eyes2,3. Kindly consult the doctor and do not rely on jalneti alone as it may cause side effects.

Studies9 suggest that regular practice of Jalneti may help improve the vision as well. From my knowledge, Jalneti is believed to cleanse the eye ducts, hence enhancing eyesight. I suggest the practice of Jalneti only under the guidance of the expert.

Dr. Siddharth Gupta, B.A.M.S, M.D (Ayu)

6. Benefits of Jalneti for Haemoglobin and RBC

Priti Verma, 20158 researched the effect of pranayama on selected haematological variables related to blood and blood organs in male and female players. The study found that two months of pranayama practice had a considerable effect on all three haematological variables, such as haemoglobin and RBC, in male players. Pranayama exercises for two weeks significantly affected female players’ haemoglobin. Even so, more research is needed to prove the effects of jalneti on this topic. Kindly consult the doctor.

7. Benefits of Jalneti for thyroid

Hypothyroidism is a common condition characterised by thyroid hormone deficiency. Regular yoga may stimulate adequate blood flow to the thyroid gland. Pranayama and jalneti may help release stress and improves a sense of deep relaxation. It may be beneficial for the thyroid and for hypothyroidism because it may encourage blood flow, which offers nourishment to the cells and may help in the thyroid gland function6. Kindly consult the doctor; if it is not treated correctly, it can have severe adverse health impacts.

8. Other benefits of Jalneti

  • Jalneti may help reduce discomfort and excess nasal flow2
  • It may help reduce snoring2
  • It might help relieve covid-19 symptoms7
  • It might help in maintaining complexion of face2
  • It may effectively manage diseases of several organs from the neck upwards2

Yoga practice may help develop the mind and body; however, it is still not an alternative to modern medicine. You must not rely on yoga alone to treat any condition. Please consult a qualified doctor who will be able to assess your condition correctly and advise accordingly. Moreover, it is necessary to practice and learn yoga under the supervision of a trained yoga teacher to avoid any injuries.

In my experience, cases of headaches, migraines, anxiety, and stress are mainly caused due to clogged sinuses. Jalneti may be helpful for headaches and migraines because it clears nasal congestion. When done often, irritability and wrath are believed to be reduced10.

Dr. Rajeev Singh, BAMS

Risks of Exercise

  • Those suffering from chronic nasal bleeding should perform under proper guidance3
  • If you are suffering from ear infections, you must avoid practising jalneti3
  • Suppose you are suffering from nasal septum deviation, a physical nose disorder involving a displacement of the middle nasal bone. In that case, please consult the doctor and perform jalneti under the guidance of a trainer3

With the guidance of a qualified and experienced yoga teacher/yoga expert, we can access and analyse the risk factors and continue to practice exercise with precautions.

Conclusion

Neti is a technique for cleansing nasal passages. It is a type of shatkarma. ‘Shat’ means six, and ‘karma’ means activity. Jalneti is a type of neti kriya, a cleansing procedure associated with the upper respiratory system. It may assist with visual, lung, thyroid, and other conditions. It appears to be effective in both children and adults. However, if you suffer pain or have any other issues when performing jalneti, you must discontinue and consult a physician.

Benefits of Bhastrika Pranayama (Bellow’s Breath) and How to Do It By Dr. Ankit Sankhe https://pharmeasy.in/blog/health-fitness-benefits-of-bhastrika-pranayama-and-how-to-do-it/ https://pharmeasy.in/blog/health-fitness-benefits-of-bhastrika-pranayama-and-how-to-do-it/#respond Thu, 29 Sep 2022 06:45:50 +0000 https://pharmeasy.in/blog/?p=163311

Introduction

In ancient literature, Yoga is defined as Chitta Vritti Nirodhah, which means calming the mind through the yoga techniques of Sage Patañjali. This concept is elaborated in the Yoga Sutras, which focus on refining mental acuity and improving concentration.

Yoga Sutras consist of eight practices: Ashtanga Yoga (Yoga of the limbs), niyamas (observances), yamas (abstentions), pratyahāra (withdrawal of senses), dharāna (concentration), asanas (posture), samādhi (oneness) and praṇ̄ayāma (control of breath).

The five elements, also known as pancha bhutas- prithvi (earth), jal (water), agni (fire), vayu (air) and akasha (space) are the building blocks of the universe and body too. Various yoga techniques can harmonize and balance these elements in our body for our overall well-being.

Praṇ̄ayāma are breathing techniques comprising two Sanskrit words, prana (vital energy) and ayama (control). Bhastrika refers to bellow, an instrument used by the blacksmiths1. Bhastrika praṇ̄ayāma is a type of praṇ̄ayāma, where inhalation and exhalation are equal; therefore, there are equal lung movements2.

Let us have an overview of Bhastrika praṇ̄ayāma and its benefits.

What is Bhastrika Pranayama?

Praṇ̄ayāma has eight primary forms. Bhastrika praṇ̄ayāma is one of those eight forms. Hathapradipika and Gheranda Samhita are classical texts that mention Bhastrika. According to Swami Sivananda, Bhastrika praṇ̄ayāma is a practice of rapid inhalation and exhalation with a hissing sound3.

Regular practice of Praṇ̄ayāma may influence the cardiorespiratory functions in several ways. Slow breathing may decrease the heart rate and blood pressure. On the other hand, fast-paced breathing may lead to a less strong but harmonious heartbeat1

  • The bellow is an instrument the blacksmiths used to blow air on the fire in the olden times. Bhastrika praṇ̄ayāma is a breathing exercise that mimics a blacksmith that blows air using a bellow to create heat and purify iron3

How to Do It?

Bhastrika praṇ̄ayāma involves the practice of three bandhasmula, jalandhara, and uddiyana. Bandhas are described as ‘body locks’. They lock the vital energy in the body. Jalandhara bandha is the throat lock, mula bandha is the root lock and uddiyana bandha is the abdominal lock. The practice of Bhastrika praṇ̄ayāma, is described by Swami Kuvalayananda, who is a yoga guru. He has researched the technique of praṇ̄ayāma

  • Sit on flat ground or a chair in a comfortable position.
  • Start with kapalabhati, which consists of 30 rapid exhalations. To perform kapalabhati, sit in a relaxed position with your spine straight. Take a deep breath and then exhale while squeezing your stomach in.
  • Then slowly inhale through the right nostril.
  • Hold your breath by three bandhasjalandhara, uddiyana and mula. First, the jalandhara bandha is attained by pressing the chin against the neck. Next, both nostrils are closed with fingers, followed by uddiyana bandha, which is expansion and chest and finally, perineum (near the abdomen) contractions in mula bandha.

The above Bhastrika praṇ̄ayāma steps are of one cycle1.

Did you know Bhastrika Pranayama may reduce stress which in turn may help improve sleep? Studies say, Bhramari pranayama, for instance, have demonstrated to decrease breathing rate and pulse rate when practised for five minutes. Your body may become more relaxed as a result, helping you to fall asleep. In my opinion, pranayama may help those who suffer from obstructive sleep apnea sleep better. Additionally, pranayama exercise is believed to decrease snoring and daytime tiredness, suggesting benefits in the form of better sleep9.

Introduction

Yoga has its roots in ancient India. It is a practice that aims to bring harmony between the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual aspects of a person. Though an incredibly old Indian tradition, Yoga found its way to the developed countries only in the 19th century, when the basic texts of Yoga were translated into English.

The word ‘yoga’ (derived from the Sanskrit word ’yuj’ meaning ‘joining’) is the method for changing the consciousness and achieving freedom from karma and resurrection.

The Great Indian sage Patanjali arranged the various Yogic practices in a systematic manner, known as Ashtanga, which metaphorically means ‘having eight components’. Of these eight components, Pranayama is the fourth aspect1,2

Pranayamas are the various breathing techniques in Yoga. Breath is the life force. It is said that when the life force (prana) in a person’s body is low, then that person tends to be dull, lazy, and low spirited. Toxic substances then start accumulating in such low-prana parts of the body causing pain, stiffness or some medical condition. Through the Pranayama, the life force can flow freely allowing the toxic substances to be released from the body1

Anulom vilom is one of the ways to practice Pranayama.

Did You Know?

  • It is mentioned in the Hatha Yoga textbook written by Swami Muktibodhananda that the practice of Anulom Vilom purifies 72,000 delicate Nadis in the human body3. Source: researchgate.net

What is Anulom Vilom?

‘Anu’ means ‘with ‘and ‘Loma’ means nostril hairs. ‘Vi’ means opposite (Viruddha). Hence, Anulom Vilom is also called as ‘inhalation and exhalation in opposite directions’.

The left nostril is said to symbolize the moon (also called as Chandra or Ida) and the right nostril symbolizes the Sun (also called as Surya or Pingla). As we all know, the Moon is cooler than the Sun. Using this analogy, breathing in through the Chandra (left) nostril has a cooling effect on the body and soul while breathing in through the Surya (right) nostril heats up the body and provides warmth. At any given time, it is said that we breathe only through one nostril. Ancient Indian Vedic treatises mention that when the process of breathing is happening through the left nostril, then peaceful, less energetic activities should be done. When the right nostril is dominating the breathing process, demanding and physical activities should be performed. The right nostril is said to be dominant when the sun rises in the morning and different hormonal reactions take place in the body. The left nostril is said to be dominant on going to bed at night.

When both the nostrils are actively involved in the process of breathing (Sushumna), meditation or relaxing activities must be undertaken.

In Yogic terms, Chandra, Surya and Sushumna are also called as ‘Nadis’. ‘Nadis’ are tubular structures corresponding to the veins and the arteries in the body. As per Indian texts on Yoga, Anulom Vilom helps cleanse the Nadis (arteries and veins) by increasing the level of oxygen in them. Hence, Anulom Vilom is also referred to as Nadi Shodhan Pranayama (Shodhan meaning purification)3

Studies have revealed that the regular practice of Anulom Vilom may help ease your painful periods. This yogasana technique is known for its calming and relaxing effect that may alleviate pain and cramping during the menstrual cycle8.

Dr. Siddharth Gupta, B.A.M.S, M.D (Ayu)

How to Do It?

Any exercise must be done using the proper techniques so that injuries are minimized and one obtains the maximum benefit. The same applies to any pranayama as well. Any form of pranayama is a very powerful practice which must be learned and practiced correctly1

The steps to do Anulom vilom or Alternate nostril breathing are as follows:

  • Sit in a comfortable position. Close your eyes and keep the backbone erect and head straight.
  • Take a few deep breaths and relax your entire body.
  • Now form the Jnana Mudra with your left hand and place it on your left knee. Jnana Mudra is formed by facing the palm upwards and joining the tips of the index finger and thumb.
  • Fold the fingers of the right hand into Nasagra mudra. This is formed by folding the middle and index finger of the right hand.
  • Now place these two fingers on the right nostril and fold the right little and ring finger.
  • Keep the right thumb on the right nostril.
  • Now breathe out through the left nostril. Now, inhale through the left nostril slowly. Next close the left nostril with the ring and small finger and open the right nostril by releasing the thumb. Breathe out through the right nostril.
  • Then, breathe in through the right nostril. When inhalation through this nostril is over, close it and open the left nostril to breathe out.
  • This is one complete round of Anulom vilom
  • Repeat the same steps alternately for the two nostrils to complete 4 more rounds.
  • Breathing during Anulom Vilom should be smooth, steady and in an unrestricted regulated manner. Anulom Vilom may be performed with or without kumbhaka, which means that you may or may not hold your breath in between the inhalation and exhalation.
  • It is said that you may start doing this pranayama with kumbhaka after practicing Anulom vilom without kumbhaka for 6 months3
  • Those who are practicing Anulom Vilom for the first time should aim for equal duration of inhalation and exhalation.
  • You may progressively increase the duration of exhalation to be twice that of inhalation, over a period of time4
  • In Hatha Yoga (the classic Indian text on Hatha Yoga authored by Swami Muktibodhananda5) the final ratio for Anulom vilom is advised to be 1:4:2, which means that inhalation should be for 2 seconds, kumbhaka (breath holding or retention) should be for 8 seconds and exhalation should be for 4 seconds3

Benefits of Anulom Vilom

Some of the potential benefits of Anulom vilom/ Nadi shodhan pranayama are:

1. Benefits of Anulom vilom for blood pressure

Anulom vilom may help to reduce the blood pressure significantly in people who have high blood pressure (hypertension) and heart troubles caused by narrowing of the arteries. It reduces the neuronal activity related to adrenalin (a hormone released in the body during stressful, exhilarating or dangerous situations) and the resistance by the peripheral blood vessels. Thus, it helps readjust the autonomic nervous system (a mesh-work of nerves that controls blood pressure and heart rate, among other involuntary bodily processes)3

It is said that breathing through the left nostril may reduce systolic blood pressure (the blood pressure in the arteries during one heart beat), diastolic blood pressure (the blood pressure in the arteries when the hearts rests between two heart beats) and the average blood pressure, thus alleviating high blood pressure. Breathing in through the right nostril might equalize the heart rate and bring the blood pressure to normal levels. It may be beneficial to reduce the morning as well as evening rise in blood pressure in those whose systolic pressure is between 120-139 mm of Hg and diastolic pressure between 80-89 mm of Hg (pre-hypertensives)3,6

2. Benefits of Anulom vilom for brain

In Anulom Vilom, the process of breathing starts from the base of the diaphragm at the pelvic girdle, on both sides of the lungs. The muscles of the diaphragm present in the chest and the supplementary muscle of respiration in the neck relax which in turn relaxes the facial muscles. This relaxant effect on the muscles of the face enables them to carry the same effect to the sense organs, namely the ears, eyes, tongue, nose and skin, without any extra stress on the brain. This reduced level of stress may help increase the concentration level and bring about greater stability of mind. It may improve memory power.

Exhalations done during Anulom Vilom also has a relaxing effect on the brain and nerves. When Kumbhaka is performed along with pranayama, a sense of tranquility is produced in the mind. The controlled breathing in Anulom vilom may help increase blood flow to the blood vessels of the brain.

The human brain is made up of two halves. The inhalation and exhalation during Anulom vilom help rejuvenate both the halves of the brain as well as the front and back side. The alternate pattern of breathing may help balance all the activities happening in different parts of the brain thus bringing about a sense of harmony and peace3.

3. Benefits of Anulom vilom for the heart

The steady, controlled breathing in Anulom Vilom may reduce the breathing rate as well as the rate of heart beats. It is said that the practice of Anulom vilom helps bring the heart under the control of the parasympathetic nervous system, which is a grid of intricate neurons known to relax the body after dangerous or stressful situations3

4. Benefits of Anulom vilom for respiratory tract

The inhalation of air through the nasal tracts in Anulom vilom may help to clean the tract of the nose and the respiratory passages up to the lungs7. It may provide relief from cough4. It may help increase the strength of the lungs which might help keeping them free of any disease3

5. Other benefits of Anulom vilom

  • It may help improve moods and reduce anxiety levels.
  • It may improve the functioning of the digestive system.
  • It may function as a stress reliever.
  •  Anulom Vilom may impart antioxidant properties which may kill the free radicals.
  • It may be beneficial in combating depression3.
  • It may provide instant rejuvenation and a sense of well-being7

The practice of Anulom vilom should be considered as the sole treatment protocol for any kind of health issues. If you are facing any health problems, please consult a qualified medical practitioner who will examine you and provide appropriate treatment. Also, it is recommended that you practice this pranayama under the guidance of a trained Yoga expert.

It is a breathing method that facilitates the opening of congested nadi or energy pathways, which may calm the mind. With increased oxygenation and blood purification via alternate nostril breathing, the skin on the face may develop a glow naturally. Hence, I strongly recommend the regular practice of Anulom Vilom for flawless skin10.

Risks of Exercise

Although there are no major contraindications for practicing Anulom vilom, it is advisable to not hold the breath (Kumbhaka) for too long as it may potentially turn out to be harmful3. It is recommended to practice this method of breathing under the guidance of a qualified and experienced Yoga teacher.

From my experience, the ‘ida’ or ‘pingala’ nadis, or the channels, may be balanced with the use of this powerful anulom vilom pranayama by being able to clear poisons or radicals. This alternative breathing method may aid in the whole nervous system’s purification, hence may promote hair growth and health9.

Conclusion

Anulom vilom or Alternate nostril breathing is a type of pranayama in which inhalations and exhalations are carried out through alternate nostrils. It is also called as Nadi shodhan pranayama as it is said to purify the arteries and veins (Nadis) of the body. It may be done with or without holding the breath (Kumbhaka). The right nostril symbolizes the Sun and hence breathing through it has a warming effect on the body. The left nostril symbolizes the Moon, so inhaling through left nostril has a cooling effect on the body. Anulom vilom is especially beneficial for the respiratory tract, the heart , brain and for people suffering from high blood pressure issues.

Spring Onion: Uses, Benefits, Side Effects By Dr. Smita Barode https://pharmeasy.in/blog/ayurveda-uses-benefits-side-effects-of-spring-onion/ https://pharmeasy.in/blog/ayurveda-uses-benefits-side-effects-of-spring-onion/#respond Fri, 16 Sep 2022 11:23:39 +0000 https://pharmeasy.in/blog/?p=162844

Introduction

You might have seen spring onions growing in the home kitchen gardens. It is one of the plants that is grown throughout the year (perennial plant) and cultivated all over the globe. Spring onions are used in flavoring food and used in the preparation of soups and salads1. Spring onion strongly resembles an onion, but there are a few key differences. The spring onion does not develop a full bulb like onions, it has a smaller bulb. The plant stops growing and the leaves wither away during the beginning of the winter season. It originated in Asia and is common in Northeast India1. The scientific name given to spring onions is Allium fistulosum, and it belongs to the family Alliaceae. You might be familiar with some of the species like onions, garlic, chives, leeks, etc., which belong to this genus and are important as medicinal plant. It might have potential health benefits, and we will discuss it in the following sections1.

Properties of Spring Onion

The following properties might be exhibited by spring onion

  • It might act as an antioxidant
  • It might have anti-cancer potential
  • It might be Anti-microbial
  • It might lower blood sugar levels (anti-diabetic)
  • It might be anti-inflammatory
  • It might have cholesterol-lowering activity (anti-hyperlipidaemic)
  • It might be helpful for asthma (anti-asthmatic)3

Recently, I came across a study that states spring onions might promote bone growth. Spring onions are said to have a rich source of minerals such as magnesium, iron, calcium, and potassium that might maintain healthy bones, and promote their growth3.

Dr. Rajeev Singh, BAMS

Potential Uses of Spring Onion for Overall Health

Spring onion might be helpful to humans in different ways, and the following are the potential uses of spring onion:

1. Potential Uses of Spring Onion for Oxidative Stress

Studies showed that spring onions may contain different phenolic compounds, and these phenolic compounds may help in the antioxidant activity of spring onions. The antioxidant activity of the spring onions may neutralize the free radicals.  Free radicals may increase the oxidative stress in the body which leads to the development of various diseases, mainly caused by damage to tissues and cells. The antioxidants present in spring onions might help in reducing oxidative stress. However, more research is required to claim the effectiveness of spring onions3.

2. Potential Uses of Spring Onion for Bacterial Infections

Studies have shown that spring onion might have the potential to inhibit the growth of bacteria. It might be effective against bacteria like S. aureus, E. coli, and P. aeruginosa. Hendrich hypothesised that the antibacterial activity of onion might be due to the presence of flavonoids and polyphenols in it. Furthermore, Jeffery et al. and Pursseglove et al.8 showed that this potential anti-bacterial activity of spring onion might increase with its concentration. However, such claims need to be proved by further research3

3. Potential Uses of Spring Onion for Fungal Infections

Erkin et al. found in their study that onion extract might have potential activity against the fungus Aspergillus niger. Similarly, in various studies, it was found that onion extract might have potential activity against A. niger and A. parasiticus. Kim’s research5 showed that green onion might have the ability to decrease the growth of various fungi. However, such claims need to be proved by further research3

4. Potential Uses of Spring Onion for Inflammation

Spring onions may contain various bioactive components. Chisty et al. study9 found that these bioactive components like thiosulphinates and capaenes might act as an anti-inflammatory agent. However, these claims need to be further proven by more research3. Do not self-medicate in case of less immunity power.

5. Potential Uses of Spring Onion for Arthritis

Spring onions may contain different phenolic compounds and these phenolic compounds may help relieve pain. Tsanova’s research7 found that spring onions may help in rheumatic arthritis and osteoarthritis by decreasing pain and inflammation. However, much more extensive research is needed to scientifically back-up these claims. Kindly ensure to consult a doctor for conditions such as arthritis and do not self-medicate.

6. Potential Uses of Spring Onion for Asthma

In a study6 conducted by Wagner, it was found that spring onions might help in altering histamine release and may help in reducing asthma. Another study by Tsonava et al.7 supported the findings of this study that, polyphenols present in spring onions might have a positive effect on asthma.  However, these reports need to be further studied in detail. Therefore, kindly do not self-medicate and ensure that you consult a doctor.

7. Potential Uses of Spring Onion for Cancer

Spring onions may suppress the tumour cells and may act as an anticancer agent. The bioactive compounds present in the spring onions may inhibit inflammatory, cellular, and molecular markers which are involved in apoptosis (Cell death). Therefore, spring onion might have an anti-cancer potential against colon tumours. However, more extensive research is required to explore the potentiality of spring onion. Cancer is a serious condition and must be diagnosed and treated properly by a doctor3.

Though there are studies that show the potential uses of spring onion in various conditions, these are insufficient, and there is a need for further studies to establish the true extent of the benefits of spring onion on human health.

From my knowledge, spring onions might be your ally in your weight loss journey. Ferulic acid and quercetin are two compounds found in the spring onion that help in reduction of the size and weight of the fat cells. Hence, they may play a significant role in overall body weight loss3.

Dr. Smita Barode, B.A.M.S, M.S.

How to Use Spring Onion?

Spring onions are used all over the world for flavoring various dishes. You can use it to flavor

  • Soups
  • Salads
  • Stir-fries
  • Fried vegetables
  • Boiled

Home Remedies For Asthma By Dr. Siddharth Gupta https://pharmeasy.in/blog/home-remedies-for-asthma-by-dr-siddharth-gupta/ https://pharmeasy.in/blog/home-remedies-for-asthma-by-dr-siddharth-gupta/#respond Wed, 24 Aug 2022 15:50:07 +0000 https://pharmeasy.in/blog/?p=162540

Introduction

Do you have trouble breathing and feel a tightness in the chest? Do you hear a musical sound while breathing? Doctors call this wheezing, and it is a common sign while diagnosing any respiratory disorder. One such respiratory disorder may be asthma which can affect anyone, especially children. It is of different types depending on the cause, etc. Asthma is a simplified term for bronchial asthma, a long standing and life-threatening condition affecting the lungs. It mainly occurs when the airway gets blocked due to narrowing or excess mucous. Your doctor might prescribe you medications which might be effective in helping with the symptoms of asthma. Let’s find out more about this disease1

What Causes Asthma?

There is no clear explanation why some people have asthma and others don’t, but there is ongoing research on this subject. Factors that might put certain people at a higher risk for asthma are1:

  • Genetics: You might be at a higher risk of having asthma if there is a family history of asthma or allergic diseases1.
  • Allergies: You might be at a higher risk of developing asthma if you have allergies to smoke, tobacco, outdoor air pollution, pets, mould, dust mites, etc2.
  • Respiratory infections: Viruses such as Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) can damage the developing lungs of young children leading to asthma1.
  • Environmental factors: Certain allergens (allergy-causing substances), fumes, toxins and smoke might cause asthma in some people as they might irritate the airway. This can significantly harm children in whom the immune system is undeveloped1.

Asthma can delay physical development in children and may be a common cause of repeated respiratory infection, it should not be left untreated, especially in children.

Dr. Ashish Bajaj, M.B.B.S., M.D. in Clinical Pharmacology and Toxicology

Symptoms of Asthma

Generally, the asthma symptoms are very obvious and resemble the signs and symptoms of other respiratory diseases1. Some of the common symptoms are as follows:

  • You might experience a cough, especially at night
  • You might experience a shortness of breath
  • You might experience wheezing (a musical or whistle-like sound while breathing)
  • You might experience pressure, tightness or pain in the chest1

Knowing the warning signs and the triggers of an asthma attack can help you avoid or control your asthma. When you follow your doctor’s advice and take medicines exactly as they tell you to, you might be able to have control over your asthma; you can then notice:

  • Better sleep
  • Possible reduction of symptoms such as wheezing and coughing.
  • You can take part in physical activities2.

Pulmonologist or pediatrician opinion and Metered dose inhalers form the basis of treatment of asthma. Home remedies help in control of asthma.

Dr. M.G. Kartheeka, MBBS, MD(Pediatrics)

Home Remedies for Asthma

The home remedies for asthma mentioned below need more research to be incorporated in daily life. As asthma can be a life-threatening disease, it is a serious condition and must be diagnosed and treated by a doctor1. According to the currently available data, the following might be helpful for asthma.

1. Karpoorathy oil

Karpoorathy oil

Karpoorathy oil might help with asthma. It might help to relieve the phlegm that gets accumulated in the chest and might help in breathing freely. An ayurvedic physician might suggest the application of the oil to your back and chest. However, more research is required to state the potential effects of karpoorathy oil on asthma. Kindly consult a doctor before using it. Please do not self-medicate3

2. Pranayama

Kayakarpam (a division of Siddha medicine) mentions breathing exercises for people with asthma. These breathing exercises are known as pranayama. These exercises might help strengthen the respiratory system, which might help with asthma. They might also help in lowering stress. Please ensure that you consult with an expert in Siddha to guide you through the pranayama exercises3.

3. Mulethi

Methi (Fenugreek): Uses, Benefits, Side Effects, and More! https://pharmeasy.in/blog/ayurveda-uses-benefits-side-effects-of-methi-fenugreek/ https://pharmeasy.in/blog/ayurveda-uses-benefits-side-effects-of-methi-fenugreek/#respond Sun, 17 Jul 2022 11:06:02 +0000 https://pharmeasy.in/blog/?p=161412

Introduction

Trigonella foenum-graecum or Methi (fenugreek) is one of the oldest traditional medicinal plants belonging to the Fabaceae family. It is cultivated in the Indian subcontinent, North Africa, and the Mediterranean region. Methi is used in many forms, such as herb (dried leaves), fresh leaves (vegetables), and spice (seeds). Fenugreek is nutritious, functional, and nutraceutical in nature. All these traits make fenugreek a well-known spice crop used in human diets[1].

Nutritional Value

Fenugreek is a rich source of dietary fibres and other nutrients needed for proper growth.  Fenugreek is also rich in several phytochemicals such as alkaloids, carbohydrates, amino acids, minerals and steroidal saponins[2].

Nutritional value of Methi (fenugreek):

  • Carbohydrates: 58%[2]
  • Proteins: 23%-26%[2]
  • Fats: 0.9%[2]
  • Fibres: 25%[2]

In addition, Methi also contains minerals such as potassium, calcium, magnesium, zinc, copper, iron, and manganese. Beta carotene and Vitamin C are considered essential components of Methi.

Properties of Methi

Methi possesses many properties, as mentioned below.

  • It may show an antioxidant property.
  • It may show liver protection properties
  • It may help in reducing inflammation
  • It may show antiulcer properties
  • It may show anticancer properties[3]
  • It may show antibacterial properties[3]
  • It may show neuroprotective (protective of neurons) properties.

Uses of Methi

Because of a wide variety of active phytochemicals, methi may show potential uses against many disease conditions. Some of the potential uses of methi are mentioned below.

1. Potential uses of methi in controlling arthritis

Rheumatoid Arthritis is a disease that affects the joints by causing chronic inflammation, characterised by tissue injury and synovial proliferation. As per animal studies[4], supplementing fenugreek mucilage could inhibit oedema by lowering the activity of inflammatory enzymes. Properties of fenugreek may help in managing arthritis symptoms. However, you must strictly adhere to the doctor’s advice and treatment when dealing with arthritis. Reach out to your doctor before using any herbal remedy.

2. Potential uses of methi in cancer

A compound called protodioscin in methi could show anticancer properties against cancer cell lines. Fenugreek extract also showed inhibition of the growth of breast and pancreatic cancer cell lines in studies. As per animal studies[6], the administration of fenugreek extracts also helps reduce tumour cell growth. However, more research is required to support the use of fenugreek against cancer in humans. Therefore, fenugreek should not be used against cancer without consulting a healthcare provider first.

3. Potential uses of methi in gastric ulcers

The gel fraction of fenugreek may help avoid gastric lesions. The stomach protective benefit of fenugreek might be due to the presence of flavonoids and polysaccharides in the gel portion of fenugreek. In addition, the anti-secretory activity of fenugreek might play a protective role against ulcers. However, if you are struggling with stomach problems like ulcers, talk to your doctor and get a proper diagnosis and treatment[5].

4. Potential uses of methi in brain disorders

The components present in methi might be effective against neurological disorders like Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and depression. For example, fenugreek extract may help lessen depression as it inhibits the activity of the monoamine oxidase enzyme. In addition, components like flavonoids present in fenugreek might help reduce behavioural abnormalities by positively altering the pathways and expressions of proteins and enzymes. However, any brain disorders should be met with proper diagnosis and treatment. If you are having trouble with any brain functions, talk to your healthcare provider and receive help[7].

5. Potential uses of methi in asthma

Asthma is a lung disorder characterised by inflamed airways that restrict the pathway for inhalation and exhalation. According to a study[8], fenugreek extract was effective in treating mild asthma and can be recommended as adjuvant therapy. Daily use of methi may help avoid the symptoms of asthma. However, do not use methi as an alternative to asthma treatment. You should talk to a doctor before making any decisions.

6. Potential uses of methi in obesity

Methi may help manage weight without any significant side effects. Many animal studies have shown the effectiveness of methi in weight loss. Methi’s high amount of fibre might help suppress hunger. Consumption of methi powder was found to be helpful in reducing weight, as per animal studies[9]. The galactomannan present in methi seeds may help in excreting the sugars from the body before they are absorbed into the blood. However, before making any changes to your diet, you are advised to talk to your healthcare provider or dietitian.

7. Potential uses of Methi for liver

Extract of the fenugreek seeds may provide protective benefits against alcohol-induced liver damage. The polyphenolic compounds present in the extract may show liver-protective benefits. The fenugreek seeds might help protect the liver cells and function from the toxic effects of alcohol. However, taking herbal remedies if you are suffering from any liver condition may worsen the situation. Therefore, you need to consult your healthcare provider before using any herbal remedy for the liver[10].

Though studies show the benefits of methi in various conditions, these are insufficient, and there is a need for further studies to establish the true extent of the benefits of methi on human health.

Introduction

You might have heard a wind instrument playing; it sounds beautiful, right? But when you hear a similar sound coming from someone’s body, while they breathe, it might be alarming. The shrill whistle or the coarse rattle like sound that we hear on breathing is called wheezing. It can be caused when a part of the air passage is blocked due to conditions like asthma, bronchitis, allergies, etc. Depending on the part of the airway that is blocked, the type of sound that is heard varies. All wheezes are not audible to the human hear some can only be heard using a stethoscope. Generally, wheezing can be heard when we breathe out (exhale), but sometimes it can be heard when we breathe in (inhale) as well1. You might not find a way for how to stop wheezing immediately without consulting a doctor, but there are various home remedies that you can try that may help relieve wheezing.

Did you know?

What Causes Wheezing?

There is a network of tubes in our body starting from the nose and leading to the lungs called as bronchi. When there is a blockage or obstruction in the smaller tubes (bronchioles) we can hear wheezing. The blockage can be in one of the larger tubes as well. A wide range of medical underlying conditions can cause wheezing, such as1

  • Asthma
  • Allergies
  • Anaphylaxis (a severe allergic reaction)
  • Heart failure
  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disorder (COPD)
  • Pneumonia
  • Gastric Oesophageal Reflux Disorder (GERD)
  • Smoking
  • Aspiration i.e. breathing in of a foreign object
  • Bronchitis and Bronchiolitis (infection in the small tubes in lungs)
  • Cystic fibrosis (blocking of breathing tubes in us by mucous)
  • Respiratory Syncytial Virus (a seasonal viral infection)
  • Vocal cord dysfunction1.

Symptoms of Wheezing

Wheezing itself is a symptom of an underlying medical condition that is causing a partial blockage of the airway. A sound comparable to that of a whistle, rattle or like that of a clarinet (a wind instrument) is a wheeze. You can hear it mainly when you breathe out, but sometimes wheezing can be heard even while breathing in1

Suggested Home Remedies for Wheezing

There can be several reasons that can case wheezing, therefore the treatment options also range widely. The use of certain naturally occurring substances that can be easily found in our homes can be used as a remedy for the treatment of wheezing. A few of them are as follows.

1. Vasaka (Malabar Nut)

Vasaka

It is also known as Vasa in Sanskrit and Malabar Nut in English. The vasaka leaf decoction/tea helps in widening or opening up of the tubes in the airway and easing breathing. Thus, it is used for treating breathing problems. It is used as a remedy by people for wheezing due to lung issues. The leaves of vasaka can be used to make a decoction and be consumed. To counteract the bitterness, sugar or honey can be added to the decoction2

2. Tulsi

In many Ayurvedic cough syrups, tulsi is a common ingredient. In conditions like bronchitis and asthma, mucus gets stuck in the airway tubes and blocks them partially tulsi helps in moving the mucous, thus clearing the blockage. We can make a decoction using the leaves of tulsi, along with some ginger and honey and enjoy it at the end of a long day. This remedy provides relief in case of bronchitis, influenza, cough, cold and allergies, which may be the reason for wheezing2

3. Black Nightshade

Black nightshade

This is also known as Janglibhata in Hindi and Brihati in Sanskrit. In the preparation of cough syrups, it is one of the main ingredients used. It functions by thinning the mucus that is responsible for blocking the airways. Owing to this function, it is helpful when wheezing occurs due to inflammation of bronchus and trachea due to infection by bacteria (bacterial tracheobronchitis)2. It can be used as a remedy by using the leaves of nightshade to make a tea or decoction and drinking it.

4. Ginger

ginger

Ginger or adrak is medicinally extremely valuable, especially the rhizome. It is used in reliving many conditions. For the treatment of asthma, a common cause of wheezing, a little bit of ginger juice with pomegranate juice and honey can be consumed. A decoction made by boiling ginger or ginger powder in water and adding honey can be useful in soothing the throat when we have allergies, which is another common cause of wheezing. Thus, ginger can be used in various preparations to relieve wheezing2.

5. Pipli

pipli

Pipli is the Hindi name of Long Pepper. It is also referred to as Chapla in Sanskrit. The fruit of this tree is of medicinal value. Asthma is a common reason behind wheezing and Pipli can be used to relieve Asthma, thus also an effective wheezing treatment. A little bit of the dried powder of pipli can be consumed along with jaggery. It can be consumed twice in a day, after food, for receiving its beneficial effects2

6. Mulethi

liquorice

Mulethi is also known as liquorice in English. When wheezing is the cause of bronchial asthma, or due to any other irritation caused in the bronchus, mulethi can be used in the form a tea to relieve it. An herbal tea can be made using mulethi and ginger, this tea can be sipped to feel relief from wheezing. However, it is advised not to drink more than 2-3 cups of this herbal tea in a day2.

7. Breathing Exercises

breathing

Breathing exercises help in expanding the lung and increasing the lung capacity by relaxing our airways. Pranayama is a yoga form of breathing exercises. Practicing Pranayama or any other deep breathing exercises may be helpful in relieving wheezing. It is advised to practise these exercises in a moist environment to gain more benefits1.

8. Hot Herbal Tea

herbal teas

Drinking hot herbal tea provides relief to the throat and helps in relaxing the blocked air passages. This may be due to warmth and moisture of the herbal tea. Green tea is also said to have antibacterial properties, which might have an added advantage. Therefore, drinking hot herbal tea can be a delicious way to overcome your wheezing1.

All these home remedies can be used to limit the severity and control the wheezing, but when there is a severe excerbation it’s always important to take inhalers

When to Seek Medical Help?

You should contact a doctor if you notice wheezing for the first time, if it keeps returning, or if you notice any of the following:

  • If you feel a tightness in your chest
  • If your wheezing is accompanied by fever
  • If you have cough
  • If you experience shortness of breath
  • If you experience chest pain
  • If you notice a bluish tinge around your mouth, skin and nails
  • If you see swelling in your legs and cannot trace out a reason for it
  • If your lips or tongue gets swollen
  • If your breathing becomes rapid
  • If you lose your voice1

Wheezing associated with fever and cough should be examined by a physician to diagnose the underlying cause as if left untreated it may be a cause of pneumonia and may cause long-term damage to the lungs in the form of scarring of the airways.

Conclusion

Wheezing is an indicator of an underlying medical condition and it is not the kind of music that you want to hear. As there can be a number of reasons responsible for wheezing, it is advisable to consult a doctor and identify its exact cause. It can be due to allergies, cold and cough or can be the indicator of heart diseases as well. It can be uncomfortable and irritating. You can try out ginger, mulethi, tulsi, etc., which might be effective wheezing home remedies. Ensure you do not ignore severe wheezing or symptoms that are worsening and consult a doctor for wheezing treatment.
