Introduction

You must have enjoyed the site of beautiful yellow senna blossom landscaping highways and home gardens. Senna is a member of a large genus of tropical flowering plants. It has frequently been used in herbal medicine. Senna is the leaf or fruit (pod) of the plant Senna Alexandrina. Senna is also called Fletcher’s Castoria, Ex-lax and SenokotIt as trade names. It has been employed as a laxative and stimulant in folk medicine. Many herbal teas used for weight loss and bowel movements contain senna1,2. Let us discuss the health benefits of senna.

Nutritional Value of Senna

The nutritional value of the leaves of Senna suggests that they can be consumed for their nutritional benefits. The nutritional contents of senna are given below:

  • Calcium: 68.95 mg/L
  • Copper: 0.23 mg/L
  • Magnesium: 1.10 mg/L
  • Zinc: 0.59 mg/L
  • Sodium: 18.51 mg/L
  • Potassium: 202.05 mg/L
  • Crude protein: 13.1%
  • Crude fibre: 11.3%
  • Fat: 3.8%
  • Carbohydrate: 45.5%

Further, there are phytochemicals also present in senna. They are saponins, tannins, terpenoids, alkaloids, cardiac glycosides and sterols3.

Properties of Senna

Several properties of senna studied by multiple research teams make it potentially beneficial. Some of the beneficial properties of senna are:

  • It might have laxative properties
  • It can act as an anti-allergic agent
  • It may have anti-inflammatory benefits
  • It might act as an antioxidant
  • It might work as an anti-bacterial
  • It can show antifungal activity
  • It might act as a painkiller
  • It might act as an antitumour agent
  • It might have liver protective activities4

Potential Uses of Senna for Overall Health

Senna is potentially beneficial in several conditions. Some of the potential uses and senna benefits are as follows:

1. Potential Uses of Senna for Infections

infection

Researchers in recent studies are attempting to explore plant products to prepare drugs against microbial diseases. Senna is well known for its anti-fungal activity, and it may act against fungal infection. It also possesses activity against E. coli bacterial DNA. Studies by Kumar et al. 2013, have shown that the phenolic compounds present in senna may act against microbial diseases. These compounds were extracted from the plant and may act against Gram-negative Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli, Gram-positive bacteria-Staphylococcus aureus. Further, they may act against fungi-Aspergillus flavus, Aspergillus niger, Rhizopus stolonifera and Fusarium oxisporum4. However, many detailed studies are needed to prove the benefits of senna for such infections in humans. If you have any infection-related problems, consult your doctor and do not self-medicate.

2. Potential Uses of Senna for Diabetes Mellitus

diabetes

It is established that oxidative stress can negatively affect the normal functioning of several body organs. Studies have also shown that oxidative stress may also be responsible for diseases like diabetes mellitus, which can increase the blood glucose level. The antioxidant properties of senna may be responsible for its anti-diabetic usage4. However, the data available is insufficient to establish the mentioned benefits of senna on blood sugar levels in humans. Further, more studies are needed to validate these benefits.

3. Potential Uses of Senna Against Obesity

obesity

The antioxidant activity of the senna may help to control obesity. The senna may help properly function the digesting enzyme in obese patients. It might exhibit anti-obesity benefits4. However, we need to conduct further studies to manifest the effects of senna on obesity conditions in humans.

4. Potential Uses of Senna for Its Anticancer Activities

cancer

The bioactive compounds in senna leaves are responsible for their potential health benefits. Studies by Onyegeme-Okerenta et al. 2017 show that the bioactive compounds present in senna might be responsible for their potential activity against cancer cells. It might lower lipid peroxidase levels and thus kill cancer cells. Further, it also restricts cancer cell spread. These studies are insufficient to give humans the same benefits as the herb. Thus, further studies are required to prove this claim5.

5. Other Potential Uses of Senna

skin infections
  • Senna might be helpful in healing different skin diseases and external body infections.
  • Senna leaf powder might help to treat rheumatoid arthritis, abdominal worms, and gout, and you may use senna for constipation after consulting your doctor.
  • Senna leaves, or dried pods, are beneficial for digestion.
  • Senna can potentially cleanse and purify the blood.
  • Senna might be helpful for haemorrhoids4

Though studies show Senna’s benefits in various conditions, these are insufficient, and there is a need for further studies to establish the true extent of the benefits of Senna on human health.

Unregulated Senna consumption for a long duration may be linked to liver damage accompanied with a reliance on laxatives. If you have one or more of the following conditions, I suggest you should consider your doctor’s opinion before taking Senna: colon issues, heart disease, or liver illness. With drugs like blood thinners and diuretics, senna may cause interactions. Senna should not be used by those having Crohn’s disease, intestinal blockages, or stomach discomfort. Additionally, it might react negatively with cardiac medicines.

Dr. Siddharth Gupta, B.A.M.S, M.D (Ayu)

How to Use Senna?

Adults can consume senna. While children and the elderly may take senna only when advised by an Ayurvedic doctor2.

You must consult a qualified doctor before taking any Senna supplements. Do not discontinue or replace an ongoing treatment of modern medicine with an ayurvedic/Senna preparation without consulting a qualified doctor.

Fun fact: Traditionally, the seeds of Parijat (pods) are used as a sore throat remedy. I recently read an article that suggests regular use of Parijat extracts may keep all the diseases at bay.

Dr. Rajeev Singh, BAMS

Side Effects of Senna

Senna is safe for adults if taken in the recommended doses for a limited period. FDA approved Senna as a non-prescription medicine. However, it might cause side effects if taken at a higher dosage. Most side effects are related to senna’s laxative effect. Some common side-effects of senna are as follows:

  • It might cause stomach electrolyte imbalance, discomfort, cramps, and diarrhoea.
  • If taken in higher doses, Senna can cause normal bowel movements and laxative dependency.
  • In children, ingesting senna in higher doses may cause nausea, vomiting, tremor, abnormal and violent behaviour, grimacing, self-mutilation, numbness and coma, elevated serum proteins, and bilirubin in the blood.
  • Taking senna for a long period at a higher dose can cause adverse events like liver injury1,2

Precautions to Take with Senna

Senna must be taken in the recommended dosage for a limited period. Further, the following precautions must be taken while consuming senna for its medicinal benefits:

1. Pregnancy

good for pregnancy

Since senna is linked to serious side effects, including laxative dependence and liver damage. It is advisable not to take any herbs without consulting a qualified doctor during pregnancy.

2. Breastfeeding

breastfeeding

Senna is known to have side effects it would be better to consult a doctor before taking any herbal supplement if you are breastfeeding your baby.

3. Children

children

Senna is considered safe for children over the age of 2 years. However, it may have some side effects in children. Thus it is recommended to be given to children with precaution only under the guidance of a qualified Ayurvedic doctor.

4. Gastrointestinal (GI) Conditions

digestion

People suffering from intestinal blockage, stomach pain, diarrhoea, appendicitis, stomach inflammation, inflammatory bowel disease, and haemorrhoids must avoid consuming senna2

Interactions with Other Drugs

Senna might show some moderate interactions with medicines. Some interactions of senna are as follows:

1. Warfarin

Senna can cause diarrhoea in some people. Diarrhoea may enhance warfarin effects and thus increase bleeding risks in people taking the combination of these two. It is advisable to avoid senna if you are taking warfarin4.

2. Digoxin (Lanoxin)

Senna is a stimulant laxative. Stimulant laxatives can decrease potassium levels in the body. Less potassium levels can increase the risk of side effects from digoxin.

3. Oestrogens

Senna might decrease oestrogen effects by affecting oestrogen absorption in the body.

4. Diuretic Drugs

Senna can potentially cause diarrhoea as it is a laxative. It may also decrease potassium levels. Thus the combination of senna with diuretics might lead to dropping in potassium levels2

5. Herbal Supplements

When you use senna with herbal supplements, it might cause potassium levels to drop too low. Taking senna with other herbal supplements might show a laxative effect, leading to diarrhoea. Therefore, it is advisable to avoid taking senna along with herbs such as buckthorn, liquorice, aloe, horsetail, gossypol and rhubarb2

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can an overdose of senna cause liver injury?

Yes, studies have shown that senna might have toxicity towards the liver and cause liver injury. This liver injury can be attributed to the anthraquinone derivatives in senna extracts. Liver injury from senna overuse is rare and mostly self-limited and reversible. However, some cases have also reported acute liver failure1. Thus, take senna as per the doctor’s prescription and follow their advice on dosage and duration.

Is senna safe for children?

Though senna has been observed to be safe for children above 2 years, there are certain side effects associated with the herb. It is thus recommended to be given to children with precaution under expert supervision and advice2

Can senna be taken with other herbal supplements?

Senna products must be avoided along with other herbal supplements as they may show some interactions leading to lowering potassium levels below normal. Herbs like rhubarb, liquorice, horsetail, aloe, gossypol, and buckthorn must be avoided in combination with senna. Please take herbal supplements only under the guidance of Ayurvedic experts2

Can we use senna for constipation?

Due to its laxative properties, senna may help provide relief from constipation. However, there are many side effects associated with senna laxative benefits. It may be consumed only if advised by a qualified doctor2,4

What are the senna leaves benefits for the skin?

Senna might show some benefits for the skin as it might have some healing effects on different skin diseases and external body infections. The senna leaf paste mixed with vinegar might be used for this purpose. Since there are only a few studies that provide evidence for these senna leaves benefits. Thus, it is advisable to consult a doctor before applying any herb to the skin4

Benefits of Katichakrasana (Standing Spinal Twist Pose) and How to Do it By Dr. Ankit Sankhe https://pharmeasy.in/blog/health-fitness-benefits-of-katichakrasana-and-how-to-do-it/ https://pharmeasy.in/blog/health-fitness-benefits-of-katichakrasana-and-how-to-do-it/#respond Fri, 27 Jan 2023 09:13:55 +0000 https://pharmeasy.in/blog/?p=169316

Introduction

The National Institute of Health classifies yoga as a complementary and alternative medicine that can provide holistic care to people suffering from various ailments. Yoga is an old tradition (3000 years old) that promotes physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health.1 Yoga asana includes yoga asanas, conscious breathing, meditation, and cleansing kriyas.1 Most people perform physical postures called yoga asanas. They provide strength and flexibility to their body while creating self-awareness, a sense of calmness, and well-being. One such asana with incredible health benefits is katichakrasana. Let us look at its health benefits and steps to practice it!

What is Katichakrasana?

The asana katichakrasana is known as the standing spinal twist pose. In English, the word ‘Kati’ means waist, ‘chakra’ means wheel or circular motion, and ‘asana’ means pose, so it means waist rotation. The standing spinal twist pose is a simple standing yoga posture that stretches the waist and makes it more flexible.2

How to Do It?

You can do katichakrasana yoga in the following way:2

  • First, stand straight with feet half a meter apart.
  • Now, take a deep breath while raising your arms to shoulder level.
  • Now, exhale and twist the body to the left side.
  • Bring your right hand to the left shoulder.
  • Wrap the left arm around your back.
  • Now bring your left hand to the right side of the waist.
  • Now, look over your left shoulder as far as possible.
  • You should keep the back of the neck straight.
  • Hold the position and breathe for a few seconds.
  • Now, twist more and gently stretch the abdomen.
  • Now, inhale and return to the normal position.
  • Now, repeat the same steps on the other side.
  • Follow this process five to ten times on each side.

Weight loss may be ascribed to asanas like Surya Namaskara, Ardha Kati Chakrasana, Pada Hastasana, etc. In my experience, regular practice of these postures may control lipid metabolism, and calorie expenditure by muscles and soft tissue, and also may reduce fat storage.

Dr. Siddharth Gupta, B.A.M.S M.D (Ayu)

Do You Know?

Some of the interesting facts about katichakrasana:

  • The spinal twist pose is a beginner-level asana.
  • Katichakrasana is performed in shankhprakshalana kriya, an intestinal cleansing technique in hatha yoga practices.2
  • The following poses should be performed after the katichakrasana pose:
  • Triyak Bhujangasana
  • Udarakarshanasana
  • Shavasana

I recently read an article8 which suggests that the regular practice of a modification of Katichakrasana, Ardha Katichakrasana during the first trimester of pregnancy may help in reducing the complications and risks.

Dr. Rajeev Singh, BAMS

Benefits of Katichakrasana

Some of the katichakrasana benefits are as follows:

1. Benefits of Katichakrasana for Type 2 Diabetes

Diabetes is a medical condition in which blood sugar levels are high because of the poor body’s capabilities to use it. Additionally, many people go into depression because of not being able to manage sugar levels. A study by Raja et al. in 2018 found that depression and sugar control can effectively be managed using Nadi Suddhi pranayama and katichakrasana.3 The regular exercise of katichakrasana may enhance glycemic control in Type 2 diabetes mellitus. However, you must not substitute yoga with ongoing medications as more studies are required to check katichakrasana benefits in type 2 diabetes. Therefore, you must consult your doctor and seek treatment accordingly.

2. Benefits of Katichakrasana in Pregnancy

Pregnant women undergo hormonal imbalances and body changes that might impact their mental health, causing anxiety and discomfort. A study by Vijaylakshmi and Jaya in 2021 found that yoga asanas such as katichakrasana, Ashwini mudra, and deep relaxation practices from the 28th week of pregnancy till the baby’s delivery can reduce pregnancy anxiety and discomfort. The study says that it may result in better mother and child health.4 However, more research is required to understand katichakrasana’s benefits on pregnancy. So, if you feel discomfort during pregnancy, you should consult a doctor and seek treatment accordingly.

3. Benefits of Katichakrasana for Intestine

Katichakrasana is a part of shankhprakshalana kriya, which may help clean the intestine. A study by Mashyal et al. in 2014 showed that the shankhprakshalana kriya leads to deep stimulation of basic reflexes resulting in the cleaning of the intestine. It is then followed by a deep relaxation resulting in better intestinal health.5 However, more research is required to understand the benefits of the cleansing kriyas and katichakrasana. So, if you have any intestinal discomfort, you should consult a doctor and seek treatment accordingly.

4. Benefits of Katichakrasana for Frozen Shoulder

Frozen shoulder results in pain and stiffness in the shoulder joint affecting its range of movement. A study by Tegta and Thankur 2022 found that pranayama and asanas such as katichakrasana can increase blood supply to the joint and surrounding muscles and restore joint movement.6 However, more research is required to understand how katichakrasana benefits frozen shoulder. So, if facing this issue, you should consult a doctor and seek treatment accordingly.

5. Benefits of Katichakrasana for Constipation

Constipation is a digestive issue that leads to difficulty in the passage of bowel movements causing discomfort, acidity, headache, and loss of appetite. A study by Thapliyal and Pooja in 2022 showed that yoga asanas such as katichakrasana can effectively manage constipation and related symptoms.7 However, more research is required to understand the standing spinal twist yoga benefits, so you must consult a doctor if you have constipation.

Other Benefits of Katichakrasana

  • Katichakrasana may improve the flexibility of the spine and waist.2
  • It may strengthen muscles of the spine, lower back, and abdomen.2
  • It may reduce stress and enhance mental health. 2
  • It may help manage postural problems. 2
  • It may reduce blood pressure.5

Yoga may help develop the mind and body, but it is not an alternative to modern medicine or ayurveda. You must not rely on or depend on yoga to treat any condition or disease. Instead, please consult or visit a qualified doctor who can assess your condition and advise accordingly. Furthermore, it is necessary to practice and learn yoga under the supervision of a yoga teacher to avoid any injuries or damage.

Risks of Katichakrasana

The risks associated with katichakrasana yoga are as follows:

  • Keep your feet glued to the ground for a better twist.
  • Relax your back and arms as much as possible throughout the yoga practice.2
  • You should keep the twisting movement slow to avoid any jerking of the body.2
  • You must avoid this pose if you have the following conditions:
  • Hernia
  • Slipped disc
  • Spinal issues
  • Recent surgery on the abdomen
  • People with medical conditions associated with the back, heart, shoulder, or spondylitis must consult a doctor before starting the katichakrasana.
  • Pregnant women should practice katichakrasana after consulting a doctor and under an experienced yoga practitioner.

With the guidance of a qualified yoga teacher/yoga expert, we can assess the risk factors and continue to practice katichakrasana with precautions.

Conclusion

The asana katichakrasana is also known as the spinal twist pose. In English, the word ‘Kati’ means waist, ‘chakra’ means wheel or circular motion, and ‘asana’ means pose, so it means waist rotation. Katichakrasana may improve muscle strength and flexibility of the shoulder, abdomen, and spinal muscles. It may benefit patients with type 2 diabetes, constipation, frozen shoulders, and intestinal discomfort. People with a hernia, recent abdominal surgery, slipped disc, and spinal issues should not perform the katichakrasana pose. Katichakrasana may help pregnant women relieve their pregnancy-associated anxiety and discomfort. However, pregnant mothers, people with heart conditions, and spondylitis must be cautious and consult a doctor before doing katichakrasana. It will help if you do this pose under the guidance of a professional yoga trainer.

Kumkumadi Tailam: Uses, Benefits, Side Effects and More By Dr. Smita Barode https://pharmeasy.in/blog/ayurveda-uses-benefits-side-effects-of-kumkumadi-tailam/ https://pharmeasy.in/blog/ayurveda-uses-benefits-side-effects-of-kumkumadi-tailam/#respond Mon, 16 Jan 2023 09:24:44 +0000 https://pharmeasy.in/blog/?p=168305

Introduction

Although, it is rightly said that ‘don’t judge a book by its cover’, it’s difficult not to be moved by the glowing face of a person. Beauty is just a higher form of health and healthy-looking skin is always considered beautiful. The basic aim of “Swasthavritta” is to keep a healthy person well by preventing sickness. Kumkumadi tailam, an ancient recipe, includes rare ayurvedic ingredients. High-quality saffron oil is called kumkumadi tailam. This special combination of oils and kumkumadi tailam promotes youthful and healthy-looking skin. Kumkumadi tailam might help to heal uneven skin, brighten skin and add radiance1.

Friendly Reminder: The information shared here is for educational purposes only and the reader should consult a registered medical practitioner before implementing any changes to their health routine.

Ingredients of Kumkumadi Tailam

The kumkumadi tailam is made of ingredients mixed in equal amounts (48gms each) given below2:

  • Premna Mucronata – Agnimantha

Other ingredients used are goat milk, sesame oil, Kesar and rose water Q.S.(quantity sufficient). These ingredients are mixed to finally obtain the ayurvedic preparation called kumkumadi tailam.

Properties of Kumkumadi Tailam

The potential properties of kumkumadi tailam are:

  • It may have astringent activity.
  • It can show anthelmintic (destroys parasitic worms) activity.
  • It may be a diuretic.
  • It might show beneficial properties for eyesight.
  • It can have rejuvenating properties.
  • It may have anti-inflammatory activities.
  • It may show antiseptic properties.
  • It might have carminative (relieving flatulence) activity.
  • It may show antioxidant properties.
  • It might have antimicrobial activities.
  • It might possess anti-cancer properties.
  • It may have hypoglycaemic (blood sugar lowering) properties1.

Potential Uses of Kumkumadi Tailam for Overall Health

Some of the potential uses of kumkumadi tailam are discussed as follows.

1. Potential Uses of Kumkumadi Tailam for Reducing Discolouration of Lips

When kumkumadi tailam is applied locally to the lips, it helps to dilate the blood vessels at the affected lip region. As a result, the active ingredient in the herb may easily penetrate the skin and enter the bloodstream through the capillaries at the affected lip areas1.

Nitin Jathar et al. (2020) conducted a study3 on 30 patients suffering from discoloured lips due to smoking. They were treated with kumkumadi tailam by applying it locally. This demonstrated improvement in the lip colour significantly. Since the primary dosha that may cause lip discolouration might be pitta, kumkumadi tailam might improve lip colour by relieving pitta1. This may indicate the potential of kumkumadi tailam in helping in improving lip discolouration. However, there is a need for more studies in this area. You must consult an Ayurvedic physician to understand the exact benefits of the herb for humans.

Let me tell you about the wonders of kumkumadi tailam. This magical oil can work wonders for your skin! It may act on the inflammation in the top layer of your skin, known as the epidermis. It has chemicals that may change how your skin cells called melanocytes and immune cells behave. By doing so, it might help lighten dark spots and hyperpigmentation2.

Dr. Smita Barode, B.A.M.S, M.S.

2. Potential Uses of Kumkumadi Tailam for Healing Wounds

wound healing

Many herbs present in the herbal preparation of kumkumadi tailam might have wound-healing properties and anti-inflammatory, antiviral and antibacterial characteristics. Combining these herbs might help stop bleeding in wounds and injuries, heal skin ulcers and expedite the regeneration of the tissue in wounds2. These benefits of this herb in the formulation need to be further evaluated by studies. You must consult a doctor before using any herb for its medicinal benefits.

3.Potential Uses of Kumkumadi Tailam for Reducing Hyperpigmentation

Antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-hyperpigmentation properties might be present in kumkumadi tailam. The formulation might also exhibit anti-ageing, skin hydration, anti-wrinkle, moisturising benefits and potential improvement in skin texture. Thus, using kumkumadi oil for the face can brighten skin, increase skin softness and decreases pigmentation making the skin radiant. It might also decrease the amount of melanin pigment released. Moreover, it may improve skin lustre while reducing the appearance of scars, dark circles under the eyes and hyperpigmentation1,2.

In my opinion, in addition to its potential benefits of kumkumadi tailam for dark spots and hyperpigmentation. It may also help help those struggling with patchy skin. This Ayurvedic formulation may help manage dryness and improve overall skin texture3.

Dr. Rajeev Singh, BAMS

4. Potential Uses of Kumkumadi Tailam as a Sunscreen

One of the major kumkumadi oil ingredients is saffron. Golmohammadzadeh et al. (2010) studied4 that saffron present in kumkumadi tailam might have properties that can be used as a natural UV-absorbing agent. Thus, it might be used as sunscreen.

On regular applications, kumkumadi tailam may also remove the damage caused by prolonged sun exposure like sun tan, blemishes, dark spots, etc. However, the studies conducted on the exact benefits of this formulation are insufficient to prove its benefits. It is better to get professional advice from qualified doctors2.

5. Other Potential Uses of Kumkumadi Tailam

A stressed person - Different types of stress

Several other potential uses of kumkumadi tailam need to be studied further to prove its exact efficacy. Some of these are:

  • It can help reduce stress and relieve depression.
  • It might have some suppressing effects on tumours.
  • It might be able to improve memory and learning capacity.
  • It can have some beneficial effects on disorders like diarrhoea with blood and bleeding piles, on topical application.
  • It may potentially act as a blood purifier due to its antioxidant properties.
  • The roots used in the kumkumadi tailam can have beneficial effects on conditions like paralysis, skin discolouration, rheumatoid arthritis, flatulence, leucoderma, spleen & liver disorders, diabetes, jaundice and generalized weakness1,2.

Though there are studies showing the kumkumadi tailam benefits in various conditions, these are insufficient and there is a need of further studies to establish the true extent of kumkumadi tailam on human health.

I would suggest giving kumkumadi tailam a try if you’re looking for a natural solution for acne. This ayurvedic product might be beneficial for certain skin disorders, specifically acne5.

Dr. Siddharth Gupta, B.A.M.S, M.D (Ayu)

How to Use Kumkumadi Tailam?

To obtain kumkumadi tailam benefits for the skin, you may take some amount of the oil on your palms, and then gently rub it all over the skin regularly for clear and radiant skin. You may gently apply it on affected areas like lips using your fingers for targeted benefits. It is best to apply it before bedtime1,2

You must consult a qualified doctor before taking any kumkumadi tailam supplements. Do not discontinue or replace an ongoing modern medical treatment with an ayurvedic/kumkumadi tailam preparation without consulting a qualified doctor.

Side Effects of Kumkumadi Tailam

Kumkumadi tailam is generally considered safe if used in the recommended dosages. Further, the local application of kumkumadi tailam on lips might not cause side effects such as allergic reactions, itching, etc. However, ayurvedic kumkumadi oil side effects cannot be completely denied as herbs may react differently in each person’s skin depending on their condition and body responses. Therefore, you must consult a qualified Ayurvedic doctor before using any herb for medicinal purposes2.

Noni Fruit Juice: Uses, Benefits, Side Effects By Dr. Rajeev Singh https://pharmeasy.in/blog/ayurveda-uses-benefits-side-effects-of-noni-juice/ https://pharmeasy.in/blog/ayurveda-uses-benefits-side-effects-of-noni-juice/#comments Thu, 29 Dec 2022 20:42:08 +0000 https://pharmeasy.in/blog/?p=166949

Introduction

Noni fruit juice is a tropical beverage derived from a fruit called Morinda citrifolia. The noni fruit tree grows in Southeast Asian countries, especially in French Polynesia. Noni fruit is a small-sized edible fruit with a bitter flavour, smells like bad cheese, and appears like a grenade. Although noni fruit juice originated in tropical regions, it has become popular globally. The Burmese used noni fruit to prepare curries; the Australians ate it during the cool-dry seasons. Noni fruit juice was the first whole food approved under the novel food regulations of the European Union in 1997. Noni juice can be prepared both by homemade and commercial methods. The homemade method provides 100% pure noni juice. Today, noni fruit juice is considered a safe, functional food that may enhance the body’s immunity. In addition, Noni fruit juice may be a perfect blend packed with potent antioxidants that may help provide several health benefits1,2. Let us discuss the noni fruit juice benefits, its nutritional value, potential uses, and much more.

Did you know?

  • Noni fruit juice has been found to have potential anti-inflammatory properties. [source: europepmc.org]
  • Noni fruit juice consumption has been associated with improved immune function. [source: pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
  • Noni fruit juice has been shown to have anti-cancer properties in preclinical studies. [source: ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

Nutritional Value of Noni Fruit Juice

A 15 ml pure noni fruit juice serving may provide 3.5 kcal of energy3. Nutritional value of Noni Fruit Juice per 15 ml is as follows:

  • Sugar: 0.9 g
  • Carbohydrate: 0.9 g
  • Potassium: 10 mg
  • Calcium: 2 mg
  • Sodium: 1 mg
  • Magnesium: 800 µg
  • Iron: 35 µg
  • Zinc: 300 µg
  • Vitamin B3: 170 µg
  • Vitamin C: 1.5 mg
  • Vitamin B9: 12 µg

In addition, other bioactive compounds like quercetin, gallic acid, ursolic acid, limonene, xeronine, alizarin, beta-carotene, citifolinoside, scopoletin, damnacanthal, and monoterpene may be present in noni fruit juice.

Properties of Noni Fruit Juice

Noni Fruit Juice may have the following health-benefitting properties:

  • It may act as an antioxidant
  • It may act as an immunity booster
  • It may aid in weight management
  • It may maintain bone health
  • It may reduce high blood pressure
  • It may have anti-cancer activity
  • It may help maintain oral hygiene
  • It may have anti-inflammatory properties1,2.

Potential Uses of Noni Fruit Juice

The following are the potential health benefits of noni fruit juice:

1. For Cancer

Noni fruit juice may have anti-cancer activity. Gastric cancer patients regularly took homemade noni fruit juice, and their condition improved. The effect of cancer reduction may be due to the Noni fruit juice2. However, despite several claims about noni juice being cancer-effective, no human trials exist to back this claim. Therefore, it is essential to consult doctors for cancer treatment and not use it for self-medication.

2. For Arthritis

Noni fruit juice may have anti-inflammatory properties. In addition, it may help improve joint pain and aid in the flexibility and mobility of the joints. One of the traditional names of noni in the Caribbean was “pain killer.” However, in a clinical trial1, participants were given noni fruit juice. At the end of the trials, the patient’s pain intensity was significantly decreased, with complete relief of neck pain. Hence, noni juice may show certain benefits against arthritis. However, if you experience severe joint pain, consult your doctor and take appropriate treatment.

3. For Weight Loss

In multiple animal studies1, noni fruit juice has shown significant weight loss with a decrease in body fat. In a clinical study5 by Palu et al. 2011, it was found that when obese adults were given noni fruit juice, every participant experienced weight loss. This may help in managing body fat. However, the study could not determine how much noni juice contributed to weight loss. Hence, more clinical studies are needed to propose a firm conclusion about the uses of noni juice for weight loss.

4. For Diabetes

The benefits of noni juice may include a lowering of blood sugar levels. In an animal study6 by Umezawa et al., 1992 was found that fermented noni fruit juice may significantly decrease fasting glucose levels. They suggested that noni fruit juice may act as insulin directly or increase peripheral tissue sensitivity to the storage of more insulin. However, this is an animal study; therefore, more human research is needed to suggest the potential uses of noni fruit juice for managing diabetes4.

5. For Skin Health

Noni juice benefits the skin and may be associated with enhancing skin health. In a clinical trial7, West et al. 2012, found that a noni juice-based skin care regimen in women effectively reduced fine lines, facial wrinkles, and firmness when applied on the face. In addition, there was no report of any skin irritation during or after the trial. Hence, drinking noni fruit juice may help to increase skin health. However, if you have any skin-related issues, consult your doctor and do not self-medicate.

6. Other Potential Uses of Noni Fruit Juice

  • A clinical trial with 10 people suggested that noni fruit juice may decrease high blood pressure (systolic high blood pressure)4
  • A study found that heavy smokers with high cholesterol levels, when regularly taking noni fruit juice, may help decrease total cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Hence, drinking noni fruit juice might increase good cholesterol and reduce heart disease risk4
  • Noni juice may have anti-depressant activity, which may help against depression and anxiety4.
  • Animal studies state that noni fruit juice may positively impact the nervous system’s functioning4
  • Noni fruit juice benefits may be associated with oral hygiene. It may be used as a promising tool for managing gingivitis, toothaches, mouth sores, and periodontitis2,4

Though studies show the potential uses of noni-fruit juice in several conditions, these studies are insufficient, and there is a need for further research to develop the true scope of the benefits of noni-fruit juice on human health. Additionally, it is essential to consult a doctor before using noni fruit juice for any medical condition.

I would suggest noni juice if you’re looking for a natural way to support your bones and potentially protect your hearing. Noni juice might have some unexpected perks! In a study done among post-menopausal women, those who drank noni juice showed a possible increase in bone resorption (which can help with osteoporosis) and also experienced less hearing loss. Plus, their mental health and overall quality of life improved1.

Dr. Siddharth Gupta, B.A.M.S, M.D (Ayu)

How to Use Noni Fruit Juice

Different types of Noni fruit juice are commercially available based on extraction techniques, such as traditional and non-traditional4. These include:

  • Noni beverage
  • Noni squash
  • Noni syrup4
  • It can be used to make freeze-dried pills
  • Concentrated extracts
  • Powder1

You should consult a qualified doctor before using noni fruit juice in large quantities. Do not discontinue or replace an ongoing modern medical treatment with an ayurvedic/herbal preparation of noni fruit juice without consulting an ayurvedic physician. They will guide you with its form and dosage based on your health condition.

In my opinion, sipping on some noni juice might help you go that extra mile or power through your workout with more energy. Human intervention studies have shown that noni juice may have a surprising benefit—it could boost physical endurance1!

Dr. Smita Barode, B.A.M.S, M.S.

Side Effects of Noni Fruit Juice

Noni juice side effects may include:

  • Nausea
  • Irregular heartbeats
  • Muscle weakness
  • Hyperkalaemia (high levels of potassium in the blood)4.

Therefore, it is advised to limit the consumption of noni-fruit juice to avoid such side effects. If such side effects appear, consult your doctor and get proper treatment.

Precautions to Take with Noni Fruit Juice

Despite the various advantages of noni juice for good health, it is essential to follow certain precautions:

  • Noni fruit juice contains a high amount of potassium, which may cause hyperkalemia. Hence, patients with liver and kidney dysfunctions are not recommended to have noni juice4.
  • One must be cautious while giving it to small children and the elderly as it may cause nausea, weakness, and irregular heartbeats4.
  • Pregnant and breastfeeding women must avoid having noni fruit juice as it might delay or alter the growth of the foetus and babies4.
  • People should not use noni fruit juice to self-medicate. It is significant to consult a doctor and have it if recommended.

I recently came across a fascinating study involving heavy smokers and noni juice. After 30 days of consumption, participants who drank noni juice experienced a significant decrease in levels of superoxide anion radicals and lipid hydroperoxide, which are indicators of oxidative stress. This suggests that noni juice may have antioxidant benefits that are good for individuals exposed to tobacco smoke8.

Interactions with Other Drugs

More human research and scientific evidence must be conducted to study the possible interaction between noni fruit juice and other drugs. Therefore, people should not assume that there are no interactions at all. Therefore, medical consultations with Ayurvedic doctors are recommended before including noni juice in a diet.

Benefits of Jalneti and How to Do It By Dr. Ankit Sankhe https://pharmeasy.in/blog/health-fitness-benefits-of-jalneti-and-how-to-do-it/ https://pharmeasy.in/blog/health-fitness-benefits-of-jalneti-and-how-to-do-it/#respond Fri, 16 Dec 2022 15:20:44 +0000 https://pharmeasy.in/blog/?p=164544

Introduction

Health is the real wealth. It is the path to one’s happiness. Health is defined as having the physical, emotional, mental and social ability to deal with one’s environment. Yoga includes breathwork practices, mainly through the nose and nostrils, and it may be hard to keep the nasal passages clean especially in those having upper respiratory tract ailments. Therefore, ‘Shatkarma’, the six types of cleansing practices described in hatha yoga, are beneficial before performing yoga asanas. Among these, jalneti is the most popular and widely used method that is helpful in respiratory illnesses and other health issues. In addition, neti practices allow you to perform yoga and pranayama much more comfortably1,3. Let’s find out more about jalneti now.

What is Jalneti?

In Sanskrit, jala means ‘water’, and neti means ‘to guide’. Jalneti is mainly intended to clean the nasal airways of the body2. Let us learn the process of jalneti.

How to Do It?

Jalneti is ideally practised in the morning before asanas and pranayama3. The process of jalneti is as follows:

  • To do jalneti, you need a unique pot known as a neti pot3
  • Take salted warm water in the neti pot2
  • After gently inserting the nozzle into the uppermost nostril, open the mouth2
  • Wait for the water to come out from the other nostril2
  • Wait until all the water has exited from the other nostril2.
  • Then repeat on the other side2,3.
  • Afterwards, water will run in your mouth, and you can spit it out3
  • Some sources suggest using milk and honey instead of lukewarm water3

In this way, you can practice the jalneti.

Did You Know?

  • The ‘nasal wash’ originated in ancient India and has been used for cleansing by ancient yogis and people for centuries. It has been practised as commonly as tooth brushing in South East Asia including India. It is named ‘Neti’ in the Siddha discipline.
  • “It clears the nasal passage. In winter, especially in polluted cities like Delhi, particulate matter clogs up the nasal cavity and lungs. This kriya cleanses out the dirt,” said a popular yoga trainer.

Let us go into more detail about the benefits of jalneti.

Benefits of Jalneti

The cleansing process jalneti has several benefits as follows:

1. Benefits of jalneti for upper respiratory tract conditions

According to yogic literature3, jalneti may reduce the progress and occurrence of upper respiratory tract infections. It may be more effective in managing rhinitis, which occurs due to inflammation of the mucous membrane of the nose. It may also be helpful in sinusitis, in which inflammation occurs inthe nasal spaces and head or sinuses. It appears to be effective in both children and adults. Jalneti process may restore nasal mucosa capacity and fight against mucus and dirt. Jalneti may also be helpful in respiratory diseases such as asthma, pneumonia, bronchitis, and pulmonary tuberculosis as it may clear the nasal canal and increase oxygen intake, improving respiratory functions. However, don’t rely on jalneti as it can cause serious side effects. So, please visit a doctor for proper therapy and try this under the supervision of a trainer.

2. Benefits of jalneti for eliminating toxins from the body

Cleansing processes like neti and dhauti might be helpful in removal of toxins and other unwanted secretions from air sinuses and nasal passages. It might even clear the secretions from the gastrointestinal tract. In addition, it may help to reduce the volume of infected material and intensity of infection4. Even so, you must consult a doctor for proper diagnosis and treatment.

3. Benefits of jalneti for rheumatoid arthritis

A study by Singh et al., 20114 showed the effectiveness of jalneti and yoga asanas in managing rheumatoid arthritis. It may reduce the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis like early morning stiffness, pulse rate, joint inflammation, pain intensity, lymphocyte count, blood pressure and uric acid levels in the participants. Thus, yoga and jalneti might be used as sound therapy for rheumatoid arthritis for faster healing if done with medication. Kindly consult a doctor for better results.

4. Benefits of jalneti for mental health

Jalneti may improve the presence of mind and intelligence. Also, it may relieve stress. In a study5, Uma and others developed an integrated approach to yoga comprising jalneti as a therapeutic tool for mentally disabled children. The results were positive as it improved their mental ability, intelligence and social behaviour. In addition, jalneti may improve memory, concentration and occupational stress. Also, it may help reduce anxiety and depression3. However, the promising result of jalneti in improving mental health needs to be explored. Please consult the doctor to avoid complications.

5. Benefits of jalneti for eyes

Lauha et al. did a study comparing yoga therapy, including jalneti and others. The result was that jalneti and others had a more significant impact on the reduction of myopia, a condition where distant objects appear blurry. Jalneti may relax the eyes by stimulating the tear ducts and glands. It may improve eyesight. Along with other yoga techniques, it may help with symptoms such as eye pain, heaviness, strain and moisture. Even so, we need more research to claim the effects of jalneti on the eyes2,3. Kindly consult the doctor and do not rely on jalneti alone as it may cause side effects.

Studies9 suggest that regular practice of Jalneti may help improve the vision as well. From my knowledge, Jalneti is believed to cleanse the eye ducts, hence enhancing eyesight. I suggest the practice of Jalneti only under the guidance of the expert.

6. Benefits of Jalneti for Haemoglobin and RBC

Priti Verma, 20158 researched the effect of pranayama on selected haematological variables related to blood and blood organs in male and female players. The study found that two months of pranayama practice had a considerable effect on all three haematological variables, such as haemoglobin and RBC, in male players. Pranayama exercises for two weeks significantly affected female players’ haemoglobin. Even so, more research is needed to prove the effects of jalneti on this topic. Kindly consult the doctor.

7. Benefits of Jalneti for thyroid

Hypothyroidism is a common condition characterised by thyroid hormone deficiency. Regular yoga may stimulate adequate blood flow to the thyroid gland. Pranayama and jalneti may help release stress and improves a sense of deep relaxation. It may be beneficial for the thyroid and for hypothyroidism because it may encourage blood flow, which offers nourishment to the cells and may help in the thyroid gland function6. Kindly consult the doctor; if it is not treated correctly, it can have severe adverse health impacts.

8. Other benefits of Jalneti

  • Jalneti may help reduce discomfort and excess nasal flow2
  • It may help reduce snoring2
  • It might help relieve covid-19 symptoms7
  • It might help in maintaining complexion of face2
  • It may effectively manage diseases of several organs from the neck upwards2

Yoga practice may help develop the mind and body; however, it is still not an alternative to modern medicine. You must not rely on yoga alone to treat any condition. Please consult a qualified doctor who will be able to assess your condition correctly and advise accordingly. Moreover, it is necessary to practice and learn yoga under the supervision of a trained yoga teacher to avoid any injuries.

In my experience, cases of headaches, migraines, anxiety, and stress are mainly caused due to clogged sinuses. Jalneti may be helpful for headaches and migraines because it clears nasal congestion. When done often, irritability and wrath are believed to be reduced10.

Risks of Exercise

  • Those suffering from chronic nasal bleeding should perform under proper guidance3
  • If you are suffering from ear infections, you must avoid practising jalneti3
  • Suppose you are suffering from nasal septum deviation, a physical nose disorder involving a displacement of the middle nasal bone. In that case, please consult the doctor and perform jalneti under the guidance of a trainer3

With the guidance of a qualified and experienced yoga teacher/yoga expert, we can access and analyse the risk factors and continue to practice exercise with precautions.

Introduction

In the current situation, every individual aspires to stay healthy by overcoming physiological and psychological challenges. Yoga has become a popular intervention for the same for all age groups. It has been regarded as a union of mind and soul that brings balance and promote healing of the body. The traditional practice of yoga includes stretching and holding the pose (asanas) for a few seconds along with focusing on breathing. These asanas tone the body and give the mental power for further exercise. One such usual form of yoga asana is Virabhadrasana which provides stamina and balance to the body1,2.,

What is Virabhadrasana?

Virabhadrasana is also known as the warrior pose. The term Virabhadrasana is composed of three words: Vira which means courageous, warrior or vigorous; Badra means auspicious or good, while asana refers to posture. Warrior pose is a standing yoga that provides strength to the shoulders, arms, thighs, and muscles of the back4.

Did You Know?

  • It is interesting to know that Virabhadrasana is named after Virabhadra, a fierce warrior in Hindu mythology. Virabhadra is lord Shiva’s incarnation. The stories of Virabhadra and lord Shiva are found in the Upanishads and add great value to the meaning of life4
  • Virabhadrasana is one of the few asanas that can be performed with partners. It is important to have two partners of similar height and a thick pole to perform it as a partner’s asana. The pole will hold by your partner above the head, and you should try to hold it with your raised hands until your arms are extended, and you feel that your trunk and your legs are hanging4.

Types of Virabhadrasana

Depending on the alignment of the body virabhadrasana is categorized into three types1 namely, Virabhadrasana I, Virabhadrasana II, and Virabhadrasana III.

  • Virabhadrasana I: The knee of the front limb is directly above the ankle of the front limb and the back limb is kept straight with arms straight towards the sky.
  • Virabhadrasana II:  Place the front limb toes in the right direction with the front heel with the back foot arch. Slowly bend the knee over the ankle.  Expand the right-hand front and left-hand backside. The hips are placed down and the head up to lengthen the spine.
  • Virabhadrasana III:  All of the body weight on one leg; back limb raised parallel to the ground; arms, head, trunk, hip and raised back limb in a straight line parallel to the ground.

Based on my experience, I highly recommend incorporating Virabhadrasana into your daily routine. Not just for desk jobs, it is proven highly beneficial for athletes involved in gymnastics, archery and shooting. The warrior poses, Virabhadrasana serve to help you achieve equilibrium. Additionally, yoga helps retain the core strength and alignment needed for gymnastics, archery, and shooting3.

Dr. Siddharth Gupta, B.A.M.S, M.D (Ayu)

How to Do It?

Virabhadrasana should be performed with proper techniques in the presence of a yoga trainer to avoid discomfort and pressure. Some of the preparatory poses for virabhadrasana are Gomukhasana (cow face yoga), Adho Mukha Savasana (Downward dog pose), Virasana (Hero pose), Trikonasana (Triangle pose), Padottanasana (Wide stance forward pose), Supta virasana (Front opening pose), Vrksasana (Tree pose), Supta Baddha konasana (Butterfly pose), Supta padangusthasana (Reclining head to big toe pose)4.

Virabhadrasana I

The steps to practice Virabhadrasana I are:

  • Take a Tadasana pose (Mountain pose). Separate the legs from a distance of at least 3 to 4 feet with one exhalation.
  • Raise your arms parallel to the ground and perpendicular to one another. Draw the scapulae toward the hip bone by pressing firmly into the back.
  • Rotate your right foot 90 degrees to the right while rotating your left foot 45 to 60 degrees to the right.
  • Right, and left heels should be in line. Exhale as you rotate your torso to the right, trying to keep the front edge of the mat as close to your pelvis as you can.
  • Exhale, bending the right knee above the right ankle to bring the body into a perpendicular position with the floor.
  • Lift the ribs away from the pelvis with a forceful reach from the pelvis. You will experience a lift in the back leg, chest, belly, and arms when you land on your back foot.
  • Bring the palms together if you can. Reach up a little via the pinky sides of the hands with the palms spread apart.
  • Stay there for 30 to 60 seconds. Exhaling, straighten the right knee while reaching the arms and pressing the back heel firmly into the floor to stand up.
  • While breathing, rotate the legs forward and relax the arms, or keep them raised for a harder task.
  • After taking a few deep breaths, bend your legs to the left and repeat for the same amount of time. Return to Tadasana after completing this asana.

Virabhadrasana II

  • Start with Tadasana’s position
  • Keep your shoulders down and your neck long as you raise your arms so that they are parallel to the floor. Exhale and flex your right knee, keeping it above your ankle. To achieve stability in the pose, if necessary, shift your feet and legs just a little bit.
  • The right floor should be your destination when you lower the top of your thigh. To balance that motion, lower yourself via your big toe.
  • Hold this position for five breaths. As you inhale, press into your feet and straighten your legs to exit the stance. Change the direction of your feet, then repeat on the opposite side.

Virabhadrasana III

  • Keep all the weight on one leg and keep straight
  • Lean forward and bring your arms forward.
  • Lift your left leg parallel to the ground or floor.
  • Make sure that your arms, shoulders, body, and left leg are in straight alignment.
  • Hold the position for some time, exhale and come back to the original position and repeat with the other leg1

I read research suggesting the practice of Virabhadrasana may be an excellent weapon against hypothyroidism. Regularly practising this warrior pose may provide several benefits for hypothyroid patients, such as reducing anxiety and inspiring confidence and willpower8.

Dr. Rajeev Singh, BAMS

Benefits of Virabhadrasana

Virabhadrasana exhibit several health benefits:

1. Benefits of Virabhadrasana in Osteoarthritis

Bukowski et al., 2007 conducted a study7 on humans and was approved by the review board of Richard Stockton college of new jersey, USA. The yoga session consists of 14 asanas including virabhadrasana performed for 5 min for six weeks. The result suggested an improvement in the strength and flexibility of the patients suffering from osteoarthritis when compared to the patients in the no-exercise group. The patients with no exercise demonstrated no changes or decreases in pain and function. Therefore, Virabhadrasana may benefit patients suffering from osteoarthiritis1.

2. Benefits of Virabhadrasana in Musculoskeletal Problems

Virabhadrasana may also help people having musculoskeletal problems. A weak hamstring can cause repeated injuries or strain in the hamstring and may stiffen the lower back. Virabhadrasana III may help in strengthening the back, calves, hamstrings, and shoulders along with toning abdominal muscles, which may help in dealing with musculoskeletal-related problems. Virabhadrasana I may help patients with Chondromalacia patellae (a condition that leads to softening or breakdown of cartilage under the kneecap) by strengthening the muscles forming the quadriceps (vastus medialis)1

3. Benefits of Virabhadrasana to Singers

Virabhadrasana may exert pressure on the abdominal muscles which gives more energy to raise the rib and may help singers. This pressure may also expand the superior and largest muscle in the chest wall (pectoralis major and pectoralis minor which are located below the pectoralis major). This expansion is experienced when arms are raised towards the sky or out sideways allowing a new breath that may help new singers to sing long phrases without collapsing their breath5

4. Benefits of Virabhadrasana in Physiological Responses

A study6 evaluated the changes in the physiological responses of the human body while performing virabhadrasana. These physiological responses include heart rate, oxygen uptake and blood pressure. A significant rise may observe in the physiological response of the individuals performing Virabhadrasana. This study suggested that virabhadrasana may be beneficial to patients suffering from low blood pressure.

Other Benefits of Virabhadrasana Include:

  • It may strengthen the arms, shoulders, and legs
  • It might maintain balance in the body
  • It may help people have desk jobs
  • It may increase stamina
  • It may increase muscle endurance
  • It may relieve tension4,5

However, more research is required to prove these claims.

Introduction

The ancient Indian discipline of yoga has taken the Western world by storm. Modern-day yoga has been excellently reflected in the blogosphere. Famous Hollywood celebrities like Jennifer Aniston, Madonna, Britney Spears, Maria Sharapova, Meghan Markle, Robert Downey Jr., and many more have been practicing the art of yoga for their mental and physical well-being.

The United Nations proclaimed 21st June as the International Day of Yoga to spread awareness about the importance and holistic health benefits of yoga. Yoga is more than just an exercise; it is a way to discover a sense of oneness with yourself, the world, and the nature.

Yoga consists of ancient mudra science, which connects certain energy flows in the mind-body system. For example, five fingers represent five elements: thumb (Fire), index finger (Air), middle finger (Space), ring finger (Earth), and little finger (Water). The yoga mudras aim to bring back the elemental balance by guiding the flow of life energy within the body. Let us look at the health benefits of one of the mudras- prithvi mudra1

Did you know?

  • Practicing Prithvi Mudra regularly can improve stamina and help with chronic fatigue. source: ncbi
  • It is believed that Prithvi Mudra can help in maintaining cholesterol levels in the body. source: ncbi
  • Regular practice of Prithvi Mudra can improve blood circulation and enhance the functioning of the thyroid gland. source: ncbi
  • Prithvi Mudra is beneficial for those suffering from knee and joint pain, as it helps relieve the discomfort. source: ncbi
  • Jesus Christ is often painted with his right hand in Prithvi Mudra, where the tips of the thumb and ring finger are joined2. Greek Orthodox priests often hold the fingers of their right hand in Prithvi mudra while making the sign of the cross during a spoken blessing.

What is Prithvi Mudra?

Mudras have been depicted in Buddhist, Hindu and Christian imagery for centuries. Mudra therapy is an age-old effective therapy propounded by ancient sages. Mudra means hand gestures made for the betterment of the physical body. The principle of mudras is that the transfer of energy takes place from a higher to a lower level1,2

Imbalances in earth elements can cause obesity, weakness in cholesterol, bones or muscular diseases, etc.

In Sanskrit, ‘prithvi’ means earth, and ‘mudra’ means a gesture of the hands. Therefore, Prithvi mudra helps to awaken the element of earth in our body. Prithvi Mudra is also known as the ‘Sign of Benediction or Blessing1,2

In my experience, Prithvi Mudra might be like a magical hand trick. It may help if someone is losing weight without any explanation or feeling very weak. By practising this gesture, one might feel more balanced and healthy.

Dr. Smita Barode, B.A.M.S, M.S.

How to Do It?

Prithvi mudra is a simple yogic hand gesture. It is performed using the ring finger and thumb in the following way:

  • First, sit in a relaxed position.
  • Now, bring your ring finger and your thumb closer.
  • Next, place your hands with palms facing upwards on the thighs or above the knees.
  • Slowly fold your ring finger and tap the tip of the ring finger to the tip of the thumb with some pressure.
  • Try to keep the rest of the three fingers extended and straight as much as possible1

Benefits of Prithvi Mudra

Some of the potential benefits of prithvi mudra are:

1. Benefits of prithvi mudra for improving stamina

Prithvi mudra may help in improving stamina. Further research is yet to be done to claim the effect of prithvi mudra on enhancing energy. However, you must consult your doctor and take appropriate medications to improve your stamina instead of solely relying on yoga3

2. Benefits of prithvi mudra for relieving chronic fatigue

Prithvi mudra may help to alleviate fatigue which may be caused due to various reasons. Prithvi mudra may help prana to flow better through the spine and the other parts of the body. Prana is the sanskrit word of breath and refers to ‘life force’. This flow of prana ensures energy flow in all parts of the body and may therefore, keep the body energetic and reduce fatigue.  More clinical trials are required to check the effect of prithvi mudra to get rid of fatigue. However, you must not rely solely on prithvi mudra to eliminate fatigue1,3

3. Benefits of prithvi mudra for osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is the wearing off of tissues present at the ends of bones. Prithvi mudra may help in the case of osteoarthritis. Further studies are required to check how beneficial prithvi mudra is for osteoarthritis. Therefore, you must consult your doctor if you experience joint pain3

3. Benefits of prithvi mudra to heal wounds

Prithvi mudra may help to heal cuts and wounds. It might also help enhance the growth of the tissues. More studies are yet to be done to check if prithvi mudra can help to heal body tissue. However, you must not solely rely on prithvi mudra in case of injury that destroys the body tissues and seek medical help1

4. Benefits of prithvi mudra for skin, bones and nails

Prithvi mudra may be beneficial for dry and cracked skin. It might help increase the bone density and help in case of bone fractures. Prithvi mudra may also reduce the brittleness of nails. However, more studies are required to check these properties. Therefore, you must consult a specialist for these problems1

5. Benefits of prithvi mudra to enhance immunity

Practising mudras like prithvi mudra on a daily basis may help boost immunity and may therefore, fight against infections like Covid-19. Further investigation is needed to check if prithvi mudra may enhance immunity. You must consult a doctor if you have been diagnosed with infections like covid-193

6. Benefits of prithvi mudra for brain tumour

A yoga regime consisting of prithvi mudra may be additionally used with ongoing treatment to manage brain tumours. The result of a case study suggested that ayurvedic medication, along with yoga therapy, may be beneficial in managing brain tumours. However, more clinical trials are required to check the effect of the same. You must take proper treatment if diagnosed with a brain tumour4

7. Benefits of prithvi mudra to increase concentration

Prithvi mudra may have some effect on the cognitive brain. When practiced along with dhyana mudra, it may help to improve concentration and may keep the mind stable. However, more studies are required to check the impact of prithvi mudra on concentration4

According to what I have noticed, the regular practice of Prithvi Mudra might help keep your energy levels up. This possibly keeps you from feeling weak or lethargic. So, it’s like having a natural boost to keep you feeling energised throughout the day1.

Risks of Exercise

There were no associated risks or contraindications that have been investigated or reported as yet. However, it is essential to take necessary precautions before performing prithvi mudra. You must be extra cautious if you have heart disease. Pregnant and lactating mothers should be careful too. It is best to perform prithvi mudra under professional guidance.

Let me tell you a secret. By regularly practising the Prithvi Mudra, you may enhance your self-confidence and might cultivate a strong belief in yourself. This empowering gesture may serve as a reminder of your inner strength, encouraging us to trust in your abilities and embrace your full potential5.

Spring Onion: Uses, Benefits, Side Effects By Dr. Smita Barode https://pharmeasy.in/blog/ayurveda-uses-benefits-side-effects-of-spring-onion/ https://pharmeasy.in/blog/ayurveda-uses-benefits-side-effects-of-spring-onion/#respond Fri, 16 Sep 2022 11:23:39 +0000 https://pharmeasy.in/blog/?p=162844

Introduction

You might have seen spring onions growing in the home kitchen gardens. It is one of the plants that is grown throughout the year (perennial plant) and cultivated all over the globe. Spring onions are used in flavoring food and used in the preparation of soups and salads1. Spring onion strongly resembles an onion, but there are a few key differences. The spring onion does not develop a full bulb like onions, it has a smaller bulb. The plant stops growing and the leaves wither away during the beginning of the winter season. It originated in Asia and is common in Northeast India1. The scientific name given to spring onions is Allium fistulosum, and it belongs to the family Alliaceae. You might be familiar with some of the species like onions, garlic, chives, leeks, etc., which belong to this genus and are important as medicinal plant. It might have potential health benefits, and we will discuss it in the following sections1.

Properties of Spring Onion

The following properties might be exhibited by spring onion

  • It might act as an antioxidant
  • It might have anti-cancer potential
  • It might be Anti-microbial
  • It might lower blood sugar levels (anti-diabetic)
  • It might be anti-inflammatory
  • It might have cholesterol-lowering activity (anti-hyperlipidaemic)
  • It might be helpful for asthma (anti-asthmatic)3

Recently, I came across a study that states spring onions might promote bone growth. Spring onions are said to have a rich source of minerals such as magnesium, iron, calcium, and potassium that might maintain healthy bones, and promote their growth3.

Dr. Rajeev Singh, BAMS

Potential Uses of Spring Onion for Overall Health

Spring onion might be helpful to humans in different ways, and the following are the potential uses of spring onion:

1. Potential Uses of Spring Onion for Oxidative Stress

Studies showed that spring onions may contain different phenolic compounds, and these phenolic compounds may help in the antioxidant activity of spring onions. The antioxidant activity of the spring onions may neutralize the free radicals.  Free radicals may increase the oxidative stress in the body which leads to the development of various diseases, mainly caused by damage to tissues and cells. The antioxidants present in spring onions might help in reducing oxidative stress. However, more research is required to claim the effectiveness of spring onions3.

2. Potential Uses of Spring Onion for Bacterial Infections

Studies have shown that spring onion might have the potential to inhibit the growth of bacteria. It might be effective against bacteria like S. aureus, E. coli, and P. aeruginosa. Hendrich hypothesised that the antibacterial activity of onion might be due to the presence of flavonoids and polyphenols in it. Furthermore, Jeffery et al. and Pursseglove et al.8 showed that this potential anti-bacterial activity of spring onion might increase with its concentration. However, such claims need to be proved by further research3

3. Potential Uses of Spring Onion for Fungal Infections

Erkin et al. found in their study that onion extract might have potential activity against the fungus Aspergillus niger. Similarly, in various studies, it was found that onion extract might have potential activity against A. niger and A. parasiticus. Kim’s research5 showed that green onion might have the ability to decrease the growth of various fungi. However, such claims need to be proved by further research3

4. Potential Uses of Spring Onion for Inflammation

Spring onions may contain various bioactive components. Chisty et al. study9 found that these bioactive components like thiosulphinates and capaenes might act as an anti-inflammatory agent. However, these claims need to be further proven by more research3. Do not self-medicate in case of less immunity power.

5. Potential Uses of Spring Onion for Arthritis

Spring onions may contain different phenolic compounds and these phenolic compounds may help relieve pain. Tsanova’s research7 found that spring onions may help in rheumatic arthritis and osteoarthritis by decreasing pain and inflammation. However, much more extensive research is needed to scientifically back-up these claims. Kindly ensure to consult a doctor for conditions such as arthritis and do not self-medicate.

6. Potential Uses of Spring Onion for Asthma

In a study6 conducted by Wagner, it was found that spring onions might help in altering histamine release and may help in reducing asthma. Another study by Tsonava et al.7 supported the findings of this study that, polyphenols present in spring onions might have a positive effect on asthma.  However, these reports need to be further studied in detail. Therefore, kindly do not self-medicate and ensure that you consult a doctor.

7. Potential Uses of Spring Onion for Cancer

Spring onions may suppress the tumour cells and may act as an anticancer agent. The bioactive compounds present in the spring onions may inhibit inflammatory, cellular, and molecular markers which are involved in apoptosis (Cell death). Therefore, spring onion might have an anti-cancer potential against colon tumours. However, more extensive research is required to explore the potentiality of spring onion. Cancer is a serious condition and must be diagnosed and treated properly by a doctor3.

Though there are studies that show the potential uses of spring onion in various conditions, these are insufficient, and there is a need for further studies to establish the true extent of the benefits of spring onion on human health.

From my knowledge, spring onions might be your ally in your weight loss journey. Ferulic acid and quercetin are two compounds found in the spring onion that help in reduction of the size and weight of the fat cells. Hence, they may play a significant role in overall body weight loss3.

Dr. Smita Barode, B.A.M.S, M.S.

How to Use Spring Onion?

Spring onions are used all over the world for flavoring various dishes. You can use it to flavor

  • Soups
  • Salads
  • Stir-fries
  • Fried vegetables
  • Boiled
  • Steamed1

You must consult a qualified doctor before taking spring onions in large quantities. Do not discontinue or replace an ongoing treatment of modern medicine with an ayurvedic/herbal preparation without consulting a qualified doctor.

Spring onion is a common culinary ingredient. It is known to be high in fibre. From my research and perspective, it may aid in digestion and may relieve constipation3.

Best Home Remedies For Gout https://pharmeasy.in/blog/home-remedies-for-gout/ https://pharmeasy.in/blog/home-remedies-for-gout/#respond Wed, 27 Jul 2022 05:11:01 +0000 https://pharmeasy.in/blog/?p=160583

Introduction

Gout can make life difficult for people who want to live an active and happier life. Gout is a type of arthritis characterised by joint pain and swelling. It is due to the accumulation of uric acid crystals in the joints. Gout can occur in joints, tendon sheaths (membranes surrounding tendons; tendons are tissues that connect bones and muscles), kidneys, and bursae (cushion-like sacs between bones and connected soft tissues). Many people get the first flare of gout on their big toes. Gout is a common phenomenon, especially in middle age. Men are more prone to gout than women. Women develop gout usually after menopause. Gout is a rare occurrence in the younger population. The gout pain often fares up at night and sometimes becomes painful enough to wake people up1. Gout has no cure, but it is possible to treat and manage the symptoms with self-management strategies2.

It is essential to relieve gout pain and swelling for people to live a comfortable life. These home remedies might help you with that.
